The Sidi Chamharouch Hike from Imlil: What to Know Before You Go

It is the first section of the Mount Toubkal approach and the best day walk out of Imlil. Here is what the route involves, how hard it is, and how to behave at the shrine.
Where Sidi Chamharouch is, and why people walk there
Sidi Chamharouch sits at roughly 2,350 m in the Mizane valley above Imlil, on the trail every Mount Toubkal trek uses on its way to the refuge. It is a small hamlet built around a shrine, and it is the natural turnaround point for a day out of the village.
That is the appeal: you walk the real approach to Toubkal, gain serious height, and sleep in Imlil the same night. No refuge, no summit, no multi-day commitment.
What the walk is like
From Imlil at 1,740 m the path climbs steadily past Aroumd and out along the river bed, then up stony mule trail with the Toubkal massif ahead of you. It is a working route — mules, muleteers, trekkers heading for the refuge — rather than a quiet nature trail, and that is part of what makes it interesting.
Allow a full walking day up and back. There is no technical ground and no scrambling; the difficulty is sustained ascent and the altitude, which most people notice above 2,000 m.
How hard is it, honestly
Moderate. If you can walk uphill for several hours on uneven ground, you can do this. If your walking is normally flat and paved, expect it to feel long.
In winter the upper section can hold snow, and a guide will shorten or reroute the day rather than push on. Heat is the other end of the problem: in summer, start early and carry more water than you think you need.
The shrine: what visitors should and should not do
Sidi Chamharouch is an active place of pilgrimage for local people, not a sight laid on for visitors. Access is not open to everyone and the boundary is respected locally without discussion.
The rule is simple: ask, and follow what you are told. A local guide will show you exactly where you can walk and where you cannot, and will tell you when photography is not appropriate. Ask before photographing people anywhere in the valley.
Guided or on your own?
The path is well travelled and in good weather it is not a navigational problem. What a guide adds is condition knowledge for the week you are actually there, the etiquette above, and the ability to read whether your group should turn round earlier.

What to bring
Boots or sturdy trail shoes with grip, a warm layer and a windproof — the valley is far cooler than Marrakech — at least two litres of water, sun hat and sunscreen, and snacks or a packed lunch. Meals are not included in the guided day hike, though we can arrange lunch in the valley if you ask in advance.
