Almost everyone who climbs Mount Toubkal passes through Imlil, the village at the end of the road at roughly 1,740 m. It is where vehicles stop, where mules are loaded and where most people discover that the kit they packed in Marrakech is not quite the kit the mountain asks for.

That is normal. Toubkal is a high mountain — 4,167 m — reached from a hot, low city, and the gap between a city wardrobe and a mountain one is wide. Rather than flying with a full mountaineering kit you may use once, most travellers bring a small number of personal items and pick up the bulky or technical pieces locally.

What the rental rate is, in plain numbers

Our equipment rate is €4 per item, per day. One item for one day is €4. Nothing is bundled, and there is no package price to decode.

Because it is a unit rate, you can work out your own total before you message anyone. Two items for three days is 2 × 3 × €4 = €24. Four items for two days is 4 × 2 × €4 = €32. A single pair of poles for a four-day trek is 1 × 4 × €4 = €16. Those are arithmetic examples, not offers.

Two things this rate is not. It is not covered by the 5% direct-booking discount we apply to tour prices — that discount is for tours only. And it is not automatically part of a trek: unless a specific tour page states that an item is included, rental is separate from the tour price.

What you can rent in Imlil, by category

We keep equipment in five broad groups. Availability changes with the season and with what is already out on the mountain, so treat the list as what we carry rather than what is guaranteed to be free on your dates.

Trekking: mountain and trekking boots, trekking poles, backpacks and rucksacks, waterproof and rain equipment, gaiters, headlamps and torches, and hydration equipment.

Winter and mountaineering: crampons, ice axes, snowshoes and technical mountain accessories.

Everything below is rented at the same unit rate. The final column is the step that actually saves you trouble, because sizing and availability are the two things that go wrong at the last minute.

A decision guide, category by category

Boots are the one item where fit outranks everything. If you already own boots you have walked in, bring them — blisters on day one shape the whole trek. Rent only if you do not own suitable boots or are travelling extremely light, and if you do, say your size when you enquire and allow time to try them on in Imlil rather than at the trailhead.

Trekking poles are the most commonly rented item, and reasonably so: they are awkward in hand luggage, and the descent from the refuge is long and loose enough that most people are glad of them even if they never use poles at home.

Backpacks matter mostly for the day pack. On supported treks, mules carry the heavy bags between camps, so what you need on your back is water, layers, snacks and a headlamp. A larger rucksack becomes relevant on unsupported or camping trips.

Waterproofs and gaiters become relevant the moment the forecast is uncertain or there is snow or scree on the ground. They are cheap to rent and unpleasant to be without.

Headlamps are needed on any itinerary with a pre-dawn summit start, which is most Toubkal ascents. Camping equipment — tents, mats, sleeping bags, cookware — is only relevant if your itinerary actually camps rather than using a refuge or a lodge; ask us what your route uses before renting.

Crampons, ice axes and snowshoes are technical winter equipment. Renting them is straightforward; using them safely is not. They belong with appropriate experience or with a guide, in the right conditions, and this article is not a substitute for either. If you are unsure whether your trek needs them, ask before you travel rather than deciding at the trailhead.

Whatever you rent, check it in the shop: sole condition and lacing on boots, tip and lock on poles, zips and seams on shells, that crampons actually fit the boots you will wear, and that a headlamp has working batteries.

Warmer conditions versus winter: how the list changes

In warm, snow-free conditions the Toubkal equipment list is essentially a hillwalking one: broken-in boots, sun protection, plenty of water, warm layers for the refuge and the summit ridge, a headlamp for the early start and poles for the descent. The mountain is high enough that the summit can be cold even when the valley is hot.

When there is snow and ice on the upper mountain, the list changes in kind, not just in quantity. Crampons, an ice axe, stiffer boots that accept crampons, gaiters, goggles or good sunglasses and heavier insulation all move from optional to central, and route choice and timing start to depend on conditions rather than on the calendar.

We deliberately do not publish fixed seasonal dates for when this switch happens, because it does not follow the calendar reliably. Snow can persist late and arrive early. Ask about current conditions close to your dates and decide the equipment list from those, not from a month name.

Rent in Imlil or bring it from home?

Bring from home: boots you have already walked in, base and insulating layers, socks, sunglasses, sun cream, personal medication and anything sized closely to your body. These are light, cheap to pack and awkward to substitute.

Usually easier to rent: trekking poles, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, tents, cookware, gaiters, headlamps and maps. All of them are bulky, heavy or restricted in hand luggage, and none of them depend on a precise personal fit.

It depends: crampons and ice axes. If you own them and are confident with them, bring them — familiarity counts for a lot on a winter route. If you do not own them and will use them once, renting in Imlil is the sensible option, provided you have the experience or the guiding to use them.

Flying with camping equipment is rarely worth it for a single Moroccan trek once you count checked-bag fees and the space it takes from everything else. The honest answer, though, is that it depends on your trip: a three-week travel itinerary that includes several camping nights is a different calculation from a four-day trek.

What to check before you rent

Confirm four things by message and the rest takes care of itself: the exact items you want, the number of days, your dates, and your sizes where sizing applies. That is enough for us to tell you what we can hold for you.

Ask early rather than late. Equipment in Imlil is finite and it moves with groups on the mountain, so a request made a few days ahead is much easier to meet than one made the evening before a summit push. We will not tell you an item is guaranteed if it is not.

Why we run our own equipment operation
