Renting vs Buying Trekking Gear for Morocco
A practical item-by-item split of what to bring from home and what makes more sense to rent locally in Imlil before a High Atlas trek.
Most people planning a Toubkal trek hit the same problem: the packing list is longer than their luggage allowance, and half the items will be used once in their life.
Some of it can be rented at the trailhead. Toubkal Views runs its own mountain-equipment operation in Imlil, so this guide is written from what actually moves through it — not from a catalogue.
Bring from home
Boots. The one item you should never rent. Boots need to fit your feet and be broken in. Renting boots for a two-day ascent is how people finish a trek with blisters and a summit they did not reach.
Base and mid layers. Personal, light, and you already own them.
Waterproof jacket. If you own one, bring it; it packs down small.
Personal medication, sunglasses, sun cream. High-altitude sun is not negotiable, and category-appropriate sunglasses matter in snow.
Small day pack. You carry water, layers and a camera; the mules carry the rest.
Rent locally
Sleeping bag. Bulky, seasonal, and a four-season bag is a serious purchase for one trip. Renting is the obvious answer for most travellers.
Trekking poles. Awkward with hand luggage rules, cheap to rent, and genuinely useful on the Toubkal descent.
Crampons and ice axe. Winter-only, technical, and heavy. Nobody should buy these for one Moroccan winter ascent unless they will climb again.
Snowshoes. Same logic, entirely conditions-dependent.
Tents, mats, camping cookware, lanterns. For camping itineraries, renting locally is almost always more sensible than flying with them.
Rucksacks. If your main bag is a wheeled suitcase, a soft rucksack or duffel rented locally is better for both you and the mules.
The honest caveats
We do not publish live stock, sizes, prices or deposits, because those change and we will not put a number on a page we cannot guarantee. Availability varies by season and by day. Send us your trek, dates and sizes on WhatsApp and we will tell you plainly what we can cover and what you should bring.

If it touches your feet or your skin, bring it. If it is bulky, technical or seasonal, rent it.
