Full description

Travellers with three days in Marrakech usually have to choose between the mountains and the desert. This day refuses the choice. You spend the morning in a High Atlas valley, where the air is cool and the terraces are green, and the late afternoon in the Agafay stone desert, which is dry, pale and almost empty — an hour's drive and a completely different country.

The morning is a valley visit with a Berber guide: village paths, terraces, irrigation, and lunch at a house or terrace restaurant with a mountain view. Nothing about it is rushed, because the second half of the day only needs the light.

In the afternoon you drive west into Agafay. The stone hills there catch the low sun, the Atlas sits on the horizon behind you, and there is time at a viewpoint before the day ends. If you want to add a camel ride at sunset or dinner in a camp before the drive home, tell us and we will quote it as part of your day.

It is a long day with real driving in it, and we say so. What you get for that is the two landscapes people come to this region for, in the right order, with the desert saved for the best light.

Good to know before you book

  • This is a long day with a fair amount of driving. If you would rather go deep into one landscape, book the valley day or the Agafay day on their own.
  • Agafay is stone desert, not sand dunes.
  • Adding a camel ride or camp dinner extends the evening — tell us in advance so the timings work.
  • Mountain weather can change the morning plan; your guide will adjust the stops rather than push on.
