Ourika Valley & the Setti Fatma Waterfalls
The Ourika valley is the closest green escape to Marrakech: a river, walnut and cherry terraces, and a string of Berber villages that climb toward Setti Fatma and its waterfalls. It is roughly an hour from the city, which makes it the easiest full day out of Marrakech for travellers who want water, shade and a short walk rather than a desert or a summit.
What the day involves
We collect you from your hotel in the morning and drive south through the Ourika valley, stopping where the valley is worth stopping — a women's argan cooperative, a Berber house, the riverside cafés with tables in the water at Setti Fatma.
The walk to the first waterfall takes around 40 minutes from the village and involves a rocky scramble with a few exposed steps rather than a graded path. Most reasonably fit visitors reach the first fall; the higher ones are for confident walkers with proper shoes.
Who Ourika suits — and who it does not
It suits families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants mountains, water and lunch without a demanding day. It is less suited to travellers looking for solitude: on Moroccan weekends and public holidays the valley is busy with local families, which is part of its character but not what everyone expects.
If you want the quieter mountain experience, Imlil an hour further west is emptier and higher. If you want a summit, the trekking hub is the right page.
Seasons and what to bring
Spring is the best season: the river runs full and the terraces are green. Summer is pleasantly cooler than Marrakech and the valley is at its busiest. Autumn is quiet and warm. In winter the valley is cold and after heavy rain the falls can be dangerous — we will tell you honestly if conditions make the scramble a bad idea on your date.
Bring shoes with grip, not sandals. The last stretch to the waterfall is wet rock.
