The Agafay Desert: a complete guide from Marrakech

Agafay is the stony desert on Marrakech's doorstep — rolling grey-white hills, Atlas peaks on the horizon and Berber camps that light up after sunset. This guide covers how to get there, what each experience costs, when to go and what to bring, written by the Marrakech team that runs the tours.

Where the Agafay desert is and how to get there

The Agafay desert starts around 30 km southwest of Marrakech, on the road towards Lalla Takerkoust. Depending on your hotel and the camp we use, the drive is roughly 40 minutes each way.

It is a rocky desert rather than a sand desert: dry riverbeds, chalk-coloured ridges and wide open plateaus, with the snow line of the High Atlas visible on clear days. That is why it works as a half-day trip when you do not have three days for the Sahara.

You do not need your own car. Every Toubkal Views experience includes round-trip transport from anywhere in Marrakech city in an air-conditioned vehicle, and we drop you back at the same address afterwards.

Things to do in Agafay

Camel rides are the classic Agafay experience and are timed for golden hour, when the hills turn orange and the temperature drops. They are slow, easy and suit families and couples.

Quad biking is the high-energy alternative: a safety briefing, a training loop and then real riding across the tracks and riverbeds. No driving licence is needed, and children can ride as passengers with an adult.

Most evenings end the same way — mint tea on arrival, a Moroccan dinner in a Berber camp and live music around the fire. Day camps with a swimming pool and private tents are available if you want to stay from lunchtime through to the show.

Best time to visit Agafay

Agafay is open all year. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for daytime activities, summer afternoons are hot so we push the pickup later, and winter days are mild but the evenings get genuinely cold once the sun drops.

Whatever the season, the light is best in the last two hours before sunset. Pickup times move with the sunset through the year, so we confirm your exact time when we confirm your booking.
