Imlil sits at about 1,740 m, 90 minutes by road from Marrakech, where the tarmac stops and the mule tracks begin. It is a working Berber village of walnut terraces and irrigation channels, and it is the trailhead for Mount Toubkal. Our guides live in this valley, our equipment shop is in the village and our guesthouse looks across it — so whether you have four hours or eight days, this page explains what Imlil can actually give you.
The village is built up the side of the Mizane valley in terraces. Walnut trees line the river, mules carry everything the road cannot reach, and the last shops before the mountain sell rope, gas and bread. In spring the valley is green and loud with water; in winter the summits above it are white and the village itself is cold but usually snow-free.
It is not a resort. There is one main street, a few cafés and guesthouses, and a car park where the road ends. Most travellers come either for one day from Marrakech or as the first night of a trek.
The day trip leaves Marrakech in the morning, drives over the Asni plain and up the Mizane valley, and gives you three to four hours on foot around Imlil — the terraces, the shrine path, Aroumd village across the valley — with lunch in a Berber home before returning in the late afternoon.
It is the honest alternative to the three-valleys coach circuit: less driving, more walking, and a real mountain rather than a series of viewpoints. Pace is set by your group, and the walking is on graded mule paths rather than technical ground.
Sleeping in Imlil changes the trip. You wake above the valley, you start walking before the day trippers arrive, and you acclimatise a little before any higher route. Afla Sky Views, our own guesthouse above the village, hosts two people for 110 EUR per night including breakfast and dinner.
An overnight is also the sensible way to start a Toubkal trek: arrive the evening before, sort your kit, meet your guide, and begin walking early rather than after a three-hour transfer.

Mules carry group loads on multi-day routes. We work to load limits and rest schedules agreed with SPANA, the animal welfare organisation, and our licensed mountain guides are responsible for the animals as well as the group.
