Getting from Marrakech to Imlil
Imlil is close to Marrakech on the map and a different world on arrival. Here is how the journey actually works.
How far is Imlil from Marrakech?
Roughly 65 km south of Marrakech, and typically around 1.5 hours by road depending on traffic leaving the city and conditions on the mountain road. The route climbs steadily from the plain through Asni into the Mizane valley, and the last stretch is narrow and winding.

Is the road difficult?
It is a normal surfaced mountain road, but it narrows and twists as it climbs. Passengers prone to motion sickness should sit forward and skip a heavy breakfast. In winter, snow can occasionally affect the highest sections; local drivers know when to wait and when to go.
What time should I leave?
For a same-day trek start, early — the earlier you reach Imlil, the more of the walking day you keep. For an overnight stay before a trek, an afternoon departure is comfortable and lets you see the valley in evening light.
What is there in Imlil?
A working Amazigh village at around 1,740 m: guesthouses, small shops, trekking kit hire, cafés, mule stands and the trailhead itself. Can I visit Imlil as a day trip?
Yes, and many people do. Our Imlil Atlas day trip from Marrakech is exactly that — a valley walk, mint tea, village views and back to the city the same evening. If you want the mountain properly, though, stay a night: the difference in atmosphere between a day visit and an evening in the valley is large.
Should I book transport in advance?
For a trek, yes — the departure time matters and you do not want to be negotiating a taxi at dawn with a duffel bag. For a casual visit, arranging on the day is workable if you are flexible. Either way, agree the price before the vehicle moves.
