The Tizi n'Test is the older, narrower and far more dramatic of the two roads across the High Atlas out of Marrakech. It climbs the Nfis valley, passes through villages that see very few visitors, and tops out at a pass with a view down the far side that stops most people mid-sentence.
The reason to take it is Tin Mal: a twelfth-century mosque in the mountains, built by the movement that went on to rule Morocco and much of Spain, and one of very few historic mosques in the country that non-Muslim visitors have been able to enter. Access depends on restoration work and local decisions, so we check the situation for your date and tell you honestly what you will be able to see — we do not sell an interior visit we cannot confirm.
Around it, the day is the valley: walnut and cherry trees along the river, terraced fields, earthen villages built into the slope, and viewpoints on the way up to the pass. Lunch is at a village stop on the road.
This is a full driving day on a mountain road with many bends and it is not for travellers who want a quick photo stop. It is for people who like roads, history and empty landscape.

Plan your private tripIt has historically been open to non-Muslim visitors, but access depends on restoration work and local decisions. We check the position for your date and tell you honestly what you will be able to see rather than promising an interior visit.
The Tizi n'Test is narrow, winding and slow, with a lot of bends. It is the reason the day is long — and, for many travellers, the reason to come.
Only if they travel well on mountain roads. Tell us their ages and we will be honest about whether it suits your family.
Yes, village restaurants along the road. Lunch is paid locally so you are not tied to a set stop.
We do not attempt it. We offer an alternative valley for the day, or reschedule.
The road leads that way. If you want a one-way journey rather than a day trip, tell us and we will quote it as a private transfer with stops.
