Agafay vs Merzouga: Which Moroccan Desert Should You Choose?

Rocky desert 40 minutes from Marrakech, or the giant dunes of the Sahara nine hours away? Here is an honest comparison.

Distance and time

Agafay is a 40-minute drive from Marrakech and works as a half-day trip. Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes are around 560 km away, realistically a 3-day round trip with overnight stops in Dades or Todra.

Landscape

Merzouga delivers the postcard: orange dunes up to 150 m high. Agafay is grey-gold stone desert with wide valleys and mountain views. Photographically they are completely different, and many travellers do both on longer trips.

Comfort and price

Agafay camps range from simple Berber tents to design retreats with pools and en-suite bathrooms, and evening tours start around 35 EUR. Merzouga costs more once you factor in transport and nights on the road, but rewards you with true Sahara silence.

The verdict

Short trip to Marrakech: choose Agafay. A week or more in Morocco and a love of long road journeys: add Merzouga. If you only have one evening, Agafay wins every time.
