The Complete Guide to the Agafay Desert in 2026

How to get to the Agafay desert from Marrakech, what it really looks like, when to go, what a tour costs and which one to choose.
What exactly is the Agafay desert?
Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand desert. Roughly 30 km southwest of Marrakech, it is a landscape of dry, chalky hills carved by seasonal rivers, dotted with argan trees and Berber hamlets, with the High Atlas as a permanent backdrop. Travellers often call it the moon desert because of the way the pale hills fold into one another.
Because it takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach from the medina, Agafay has become the practical alternative to Merzouga or Zagora, which need 8 to 10 hours of driving each way. You get the silence, the sunsets and the camp experience within a single afternoon.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November are ideal, with daytime temperatures around 22-30°C and cool evenings. June to August is hot at midday but excellent for late afternoon and sunset tours, especially at camps with a pool.
Winter days are crisp and clear with the best Atlas visibility of the year, but nights drop close to freezing, so pack a real jacket if you are staying for dinner.
Agafay or the Sahara?
Agafay is the right choice when you have one afternoon or one evening in Marrakech and want desert silence, an Atlas horizon and a camp dinner without losing two days to the road. It is stone and chalk, not dunes.
If seeing real sand dunes matters more to you than time, that is Merzouga or Zagora in the Sahara, and it needs at least two nights. Neither is a substitute for the other, so choose by what you actually want to see.
Sunset or daytime?
Sunset is the reason most people go. The light on the pale hills in the last hour before dusk is the photograph you came for, and evening departures pair naturally with dinner in a camp.
Daytime works better if you want a pool, lunch and a slower afternoon, or if you are travelling with young children who will be tired by a late dinner. In high summer, midday in the open is genuinely hot — plan around it rather than through it.
Driving a buggy in Agafay
Buggies are the newest way most travellers see Agafay, and the difference from a quad is that you drive sitting side by side: one buggy carries two people, so a driver and a passenger share the vehicle and can swap if both hold a licence. The driving lasts one hour on the same gravel tracks and dry riverbeds the quads use.
The rules matter more here than with a camel ride: the person at the wheel must be 18 or over with a valid driving licence, which is checked before you set off, and passengers must be 13 or over. Daytime buggy days leave Marrakech around 09:30 and pair the drive with a Moroccan lunch and pool time; the evening version leaves around 15:30 and ends with dinner in the desert instead.
Camel, quad, dinner, pool — what each one is really like
The camel ride is short, gentle and scenic rather than a trek; it suits almost everyone, including children accompanied by an adult. Quad biking is the opposite: dusty, loud and fun, on tracks between the hills, with helmets and a guide leading.
Dinner in a camp is usually a Moroccan set menu served under lights, often with live music. A pool day pass is a different day altogether — shade, loungers, lunch and a swim with the Atlas in view.
Private or shared, and getting there from Marrakech
Agafay is 30 to 45 minutes from central Marrakech by road. Taxis do go there, but the return leg after dark from a camp is the part people underestimate, so a tour that includes round-trip transport is usually simpler and no more expensive.
Shared departures are the affordable default and are perfectly pleasant. Choose private when you are a family, when you want your own timings, or when you want to combine two activities in one evening. Each product page states exactly what transport is included — where it does not say so, assume it is not.

What to expect on the day
You are picked up in Marrakech at the time confirmed on your booking, drive out past the last suburbs into open country, and arrive with time before the light goes. Activities run first, dinner follows, and you are driven back the same evening.
Closed shoes, sunglasses, a scarf for dust, sunscreen and a warm layer for after sunset. Bring cash for tips and small purchases — most camps have no card machine and mobile coverage is patchy.
