What exactly is the Agafay desert?

Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand desert. Roughly 30 km southwest of Marrakech, it is a landscape of dry, chalky hills carved by seasonal rivers, dotted with argan trees and Berber hamlets, with the High Atlas as a permanent backdrop. Travellers often call it the moon desert because of the way the pale hills fold into one another.

Because it takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach from the medina, Agafay has become the practical alternative to Merzouga or Zagora, which need 8 to 10 hours of driving each way. You get the silence, the sunsets and the camp experience within a single afternoon.

Best time to visit

March to May and September to November are ideal, with daytime temperatures around 22-30°C and cool evenings. June to August is hot at midday but excellent for late afternoon and sunset tours, especially at camps with a pool.

Winter days are crisp and clear with the best Atlas visibility of the year, but nights drop close to freezing, so pack a real jacket if you are staying for dinner.

If you want the classic evening, pick the sunset camel ride with dinner show. If you want adrenaline, add quad biking. If you want to slow down, book a day pass or overnight at a luxury camp with a pool.
