Hoogtepunten

  • The Tizi n'Test, the old High Atlas crossing south of Marrakech
  • The twelfth-century Tin Mal mosque in the Nfis valley
  • Villages and terraces well off the standard day-trip circuit
  • Viewpoints on the climb up to the pass
  • Walnut and cherry country along the river
  • Your own driver for the whole day

Volledige beschrijving

The Tizi n'Test is the older, narrower and far more dramatic of the two roads across the High Atlas out of Marrakech. It climbs the Nfis valley, passes through villages that see very few visitors, and tops out at a pass with a view down the far side that stops most people mid-sentence.

The reason to take it is Tin Mal: a twelfth-century mosque in the mountains, built by the movement that went on to rule Morocco and much of Spain, and one of very few historic mosques in the country that non-Muslim visitors have been able to enter. Access depends on restoration work and local decisions, so we check the situation for your date and tell you honestly what you will be able to see — we do not sell an interior visit we cannot confirm.

Around it, the day is the valley: walnut and cherry trees along the river, terraced fields, earthen villages built into the slope, and viewpoints on the way up to the pass. Lunch is at a village stop on the road.

This is a full driving day on a mountain road with many bends and it is not for travellers who want a quick photo stop. It is for people who like roads, history and empty landscape.
