You've probably seen Aït Ben Haddou on screen before you ever knew its name. But is the journey from Marrakech actually worth a full day? Here is an honest answer, with the drive, the visit and the trade-offs laid out.
The short answer
Yes — if you accept that most of the day is spent on the road. Aït Ben Haddou is roughly four hours' drive from Marrakech each way, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas. The drive is scenic and is a real part of the day, but it is long. If eight hours in a vehicle sounds like too much, the ksar works better as the first stop of a multi-day route towards the Sahara.
What is Aït Ben Haddou?
Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar — a fortified village of earthen houses and towers inside defensive walls — rising up a hillside in the province of Ouarzazate, in southern Morocco. It stands on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Marrakech to Aït Ben Haddou: the road
There is no rail link. The only practical way from Marrakech is by road: out of the Haouz plain, up into the High Atlas, over the Tizi n'Tichka at more than 2,000 m, and down into the dry pre-Saharan south. The landscape, light and architecture change within an hour of the pass.
The pass is much colder than Marrakech, and in winter it can be affected by snow. Ouarzazate, the regional town, is about half an hour beyond the ksar.

What you actually do there
The visit is on foot. You reach the ksar across the river, then climb through lanes of earthen houses to the ruined granary at the top of the hill, where the view opens over the valley. It is walking on uneven earth and stone, with steps and slopes — comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
Plan for a walking visit rather than a museum: the ksar itself is the experience. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, say so in advance so the visit can be planned realistically.
Who this trip suits — and who it doesn't
It suits travellers based in Marrakech with one day to give to the south, who want to see a UNESCO ksar and the High Atlas road rather than tick off a photo stop. It suits less well anyone who dislikes long drives on mountain roads, or who is already doing a Sahara circuit that passes the ksar anyway.
What to check before you book
Whether the tour is private or shared; whether lunch, a local guide at the ksar and entrance fees are included; where pickup happens; and what happens if the Tizi n'Tichka is closed. Also ask how departure and return times are fixed — on a four-hours-each-way day, that decides how much light you get at the ksar.
