This 3-day mount toubkal trek via the azzaden valley from marrakech offers a structured climb to the highest summit in North Africa for active travellers. Walking through the quiet Azzaden valley instead of rushing the direct route, you have extra acclimatisation time to increase your summit success rate. It suits walkers who want to experience both high mountain passes and traditional Berber villages at a measured pace.
Your journey starts with a drive from Marrakech through Asni and the Kik plateau to the trailhead at Imlil. From there, you trek for five hours over the Tizi Mzik pass at 2,489 metres before descending into the green Azzaden valley. You will spend your first night in a family-run Berber gite in Tizi Oussem, eating a home-cooked tagine while your body adjusts to the mountain elevation.
On the second morning, you climb steadily for six hours up to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 metres, stopping for lunch along the trail as the main massif opens up. The final day begins at dawn with a three-to-four-hour climb to the summit of Jbel Toubkal at 4,167 metres. After capturing the sunrise from the peak, you descend through the Mizane valley to Imlil before returning to Marrakech.
You travel in a small group of maximum ten people, supported by a certified mountain guide, a cook, and muleteers. The team looks after all your meals, trail snacks, and mint tea, and they communicate in English, French, and Berber. Your booking includes return private transport between Marrakech and Imlil, as well as a night in the gite and another at the mountain refuge.
For this trek, you need to bring personal gear including broken-in boots, three warm layers, a waterproof shell, and a headlamp. A sleeping bag is required but can be rented if you do not bring your own. If you join this trek during winter conditions, crampons and ice axes are fully provided to ensure you can safely navigate the high mountain trails.
