This 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga takes you on a classic Moroccan road trip across the High Atlas mountains to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. This adventure suits travellers wanting to experience the contrast of rocky gorges, ancient kasbahs, and vast desert plains in a short timeframe. You can choose to travel as a small group or book a private tour in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Your journey begins early on the first day as you cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass at an altitude of 2,260 metres, stopping at the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou kasbah and the film studios in Ouarzazate. From there, you travel through the Valley of Roses to reach your hotel in the Dades gorges for your first night. The next day leads you through the towering cliffs of the Todra gorge and across the black hamada stone desert to Merzouga.
In the late afternoon, you meet your camels and ride into the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi to reach your desert camp. You will spend the evening enjoying a tagine dinner around the fire accompanied by traditional Berber drumming before sleeping under the stars. The final day starts with a sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at the camp, followed by the long return drive through Rissani and Ouarzazate back to Marrakech.
Your tour includes transport in a modern minivan or private four-wheel-drive, led by an English-speaking driver who can also communicate in French and Spanish. Convenient hotel pickup in Marrakech is provided, and two breakfasts and two dinners are included with your overnight stays. You will need to bring cash for daily lunches, any optional entrance fees, and tips, along with sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf for protection against the sand. A warm layer of clothing is also essential for the cold desert nights.
