Zagora is the desert you can reach in a day from Marrakech. It is not the towering dunes of Merzouga — those are eight to ten hours away — but the drive is shorter, the Draa Valley palm groves on the way are spectacular, and you still finish the day on a camel with a night under the stars.
The route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, and then follows the Draa river south past kasbahs and thousands of date palms.
In the late afternoon you swap the vehicle for a camel, ride out to the camp, eat a Moroccan dinner and sit around the fire for Berber drumming before sleeping in a tent. The next morning brings the same road back with different light.
