This Zagora desert tour from Marrakech offers the fastest way to sleep in the Sahara desert if you have limited time in Morocco. It suits travellers who want to experience a camel ride and a night in a Berber camp without making the much longer journey to the high dunes of Merzouga. You will travel across the High Atlas Mountains and through historic valleys on a structured two-day itinerary.
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech before climbing the Tizi n'Tichka pass across the High Atlas. You will stop for viewpoints and take a walk through the earthen kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, the route passes through Ouarzazate and follows the Draa River south through expansive palm groves and traditional kasbah villages.
In the late afternoon, you swap your air-conditioned transport for a camel to ride into the Zagora desert as the sun sets. At the camp, you will have a Moroccan dinner and sit around the campfire for traditional Berber drumming under the stars before sleeping in a tent. The following morning, you enjoy breakfast at the camp and travel back to Marrakech with scenic stops along the way.

While Zagora is a stony desert with smaller dunes compared to Merzouga, it provides a complete desert camp experience within two days. You should prepare for a drive of about seven hours each way, broken up by regular stops. This tour is suitable for most travellers, though you will need warm clothing for the cold desert nights and comfortable shoes for walking.
