  • A night in the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga

  • The Draa Valley palm groves and kasbahs
  • Ait Ben Haddou and the Ouarzazate kasbahs
  • Shorter driving days than a three-day desert tour

Full description

Five days lets you turn the desert into a circuit instead of an out-and-back drive. You go east through the gorges to the Erg Chebbi dunes and return along the Draa Valley, the longest river in Morocco, past kasbah villages and thousands of date palms.

The pace is deliberately slower than the three or four-day versions: shorter driving days, more stops at viewpoints and villages, and time to walk in the palm groves rather than photograph them from the road.

You spend a night in the dunes at Merzouga and a night in the Draa or Zagora area on the way back, plus nights in the Dades Valley and near Ait Ben Haddou. It suits travellers who dislike rushed itineraries and photographers who want the light at both ends of the day.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades

Tizi n'Tichka, the UNESCO kasbah, Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley.

  2. Day 2

    Dades → Todra → Merzouga

The gorges in the morning, then east to Erg Chebbi. Camel ride at sunset and a night in a desert camp.

  3. Day 3

Merzouga → Rissani → Draa Valley

Dune sunrise, the market town of Rissani, then southwest across the desert plains to the Draa Valley.

  4. Day 4

Draa Valley → Zagora → Agdz

A slow day among the palm groves, kasbahs and pottery villages of the Draa, overnighting near Agdz.

  5. Day 5

    Agdz → Tizi n'Tinififft → Marrakech

Over the Tinififft pass to Ouarzazate and back across the Atlas to Marrakech.

Good to know before you book

  • This is a private tour: only your group travels in the vehicle.
  • Departure dates are flexible — the itinerary starts on the day that suits you.
  • Driving distances in Morocco are long; the itinerary is paced so each day includes stops, viewpoints and time to walk around.
  • Monument entrance fees are not included and are paid locally, so you only pay for the sites you choose to enter.
  • Accommodation is selected for comfort and location; we confirm the standard with you before booking and never name a specific hotel until it is reserved.
  • Anything not listed as included may require an extra payment — we will tell you the cost before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the 4-day Sahara tour?

The four-day tour returns the way it came. This one loops back through the Draa Valley, so you see new scenery on the return and drive fewer hours per day.

Can we add a second night in the dunes?

Yes — we can swap the Draa night for a second Merzouga camp night, or extend the trip by a day.

Is it suitable in summer?

It runs year-round, but from June to August the desert is very hot. We shift departure times earlier and plan longer midday breaks.

What vehicle is used?

A private air-conditioned car, minivan or 4x4 depending on group size and season.
