Full description

Most travellers with five days pick either the mountains or the desert. This itinerary is built so you do not have to, and it is honest about how that works: two halves, run back to back, with a night in Marrakech in between where the vehicle changes and the mountain team hands you over to the desert team.

The first half is the Toubkal ascent from Imlil — up the Mizane valley to the refuge at 3,207 m, then a pre-dawn summit push to 4,167 m and back down to Marrakech. The second half is the desert road we already run: over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades valley, the Todra gorge, and east to Erg Chebbi for a camel ride, dinner and a night in a Berber camp among the tall dunes.

Merzouga is the desert destination here, not Zagora — it is where the high dunes are, and it is the route our desert operation runs. The trade is distance: day five is a long drive back to Marrakech, and we would rather tell you that now than at 6 a.m. on the last morning.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech → Imlil → Toubkal refuge

Transfer to Imlil at 1,740 m, meet your guide and muleteers, then walk up the Mizane valley past Sidi Chamharouch to the refuge at 3,207 m.

  2. Day 2

    Toubkal summit → Marrakech

Pre-dawn summit attempt at 4,167 m, descent to Imlil for a late lunch and the transfer back to Marrakech for the night.

  3. Day 3

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades valley

Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a walk through the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and Skoura, arriving in the Dades valley for the night.

  4. Day 4

Dades → Todra → Merzouga dunes

The Dades hairpins and the Todra gorge in the morning, then east to Erg Chebbi. Camel ride at sunset, dinner and a night in the camp.

  5. Day 5

    Dune sunrise → Marrakech

Sunrise over the dunes and breakfast, then the long drive back across the south to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.

Good to know before you book

  • This is two different trips run back to back. Day 2 finishes in Marrakech and day 3 starts there: the hotel night in between is yours to book, or we can arrange it and quote it separately.
  • The summit is a serious mountain day at altitude with no acclimatisation day built in. If you would rather arrive at the summit acclimatised, take the 4-day Toubkal trek and add a desert tour afterwards.
  • The summit is never guaranteed — weather, snow and altitude decide, and the guide's call is final. The desert half runs regardless.
  • Day 5 is a long drive of roughly nine to ten hours from the dunes back to Marrakech, broken by stops.
  • From December to March the upper mountain is snow-covered and crampons and an ice axe are supplied with instruction.
  • Standard desert camps have shared bathroom facilities; en-suite camps are available for a supplement.

Booking with Toubkal Views

  • Questions answered on WhatsApp before and during your trip.
  • Your hotel pickup point and time are confirmed with you in writing before the tour.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really combine Mount Toubkal and the Sahara in five days?

Yes, but only as two sections run back to back. Days 1 and 2 are the guided Toubkal ascent from Imlil; day 2 ends in Marrakech; days 3 to 5 are the road route out to Erg Chebbi and back. Nothing is walked between the mountain and the desert — the transition is a night in Marrakech and a change of vehicle and team.

Which desert do we sleep in?

Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, the tall dune field in the south east. It is the desert our own three-day route already uses. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but its dunes are much smaller.

How long is the drive on the desert days?

Day 3 crosses the Atlas to the Dades valley, day 4 continues east to the dunes, and day 5 is the long return of roughly nine to ten hours with stops. It is a lot of road, which is the honest cost of seeing both landscapes in five days.

Is Marrakech accommodation included?

No. The refuge night, the Dades valley night and the desert camp night are included. The hotel night in Marrakech between the two sections is not — tell us if you want us to arrange it and we quote it separately.

What happens if weather prevents the summit?

Your guide turns the group around, and the desert section still runs as planned. We never push a summit day in unsafe conditions and there is no reserve day in this format.

Do I need trekking experience?

You need good general fitness and to be comfortable with a long ascent day at altitude. No technical climbing skill is required, but this itinerary has no acclimatisation day, so it suits active walkers rather than complete beginners.

Is this private or shared?

The trekking section runs privately or in a small group of up to twelve. The desert section runs as a small group by default, with a private vehicle available for a supplement.

Is the camel ride compulsory?

No. If you would rather not ride, we transfer you to the camp by vehicle instead.

How long does the 5-Day Toubkal & Sahara last?

This experience lasts 5 days / 4 nights. The experience runs from Marrakech.

Is hotel pickup included in the 5-Day Toubkal & Sahara?

How much does the 5-Day Toubkal & Sahara cost?

How many people join the 5-Day Toubkal & Sahara?

Private or small group, max 12. This tour is available as private or small group.
