The 6 Best Day Trips from Marrakech (and Which to Skip)

Agafay, Ourika, the 3 valleys, Ouzoud, Essaouira or the Sahara — an honest ranking based on driving time versus payoff.

1. Agafay desert (40 minutes)

Best payoff per hour of driving in the whole region. Quad bikes, camels and a dinner show, and you are back at your riad by 22:00.

2. Ourika valley and Setti Fatma (1 hour)

Green, cool and cheap, with a genuine little scramble to the waterfalls and lunch at tables standing in the river. The best summer escape from the medina heat.

3. High Atlas 3 valleys and Imlil (1 hour)

Mountain panoramas, a Berber home visit and a gentle walk under Mount Toubkal. Choose this over Ourika if you prefer views and villages to water.

4. Ouzoud waterfalls (2.5 hours)

110 m cascades and wild macaques. Spectacular, but it is five hours in the car — only worth it if waterfalls are a priority for you.

5. Essaouira (2.5 hours)

Atlantic ramparts, seafood and wind. A lovely day, though the town really deserves an overnight stay.

6. Merzouga in one day — skip it

Some sellers offer the Sahara as a day trip. It is 560 km each way. Do it properly over three days with nights in Dades and a desert camp, or choose Agafay instead.
