Winter Mount Toubkal: Is 3 Days Enough, or Do You Need the Expedition?

Snow changes Toubkal from a hike into a mountain day on crampons. Here is what a short winter ascent gives you, what a full expedition adds, and how to tell which one you need.
What winter actually changes on Mount Toubkal
From roughly December to March the upper mountain is under snow. The route to the 4,167 m summit is not technical climbing at any time of year, but in winter it stops being walking: you move on crampons, you carry an ice axe, and the ground you crossed easily in October becomes a firm snow slope where a slip matters.
The rest of the change is weather and daylight. Cold at the refuge, wind on the summit ridge, shorter days and conditions that can shut a summit morning down with no warning. That is the honest picture, and it is the reason winter Toubkal is guided differently from summer Toubkal.
What a 3-day winter ascent gives you
Three days is the shortest honest winter format: a transfer to Imlil and a night in a Berber gîte, a climb up the Mizane valley to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 m, and a pre-dawn summit attempt on the third morning before descending and driving back to Marrakech.
Crampons and an ice axe are supplied, and your guide runs you through using them before the summit day. What three days cannot contain is spare time: there is no dedicated snow-skills day and no reserve day. If your summit morning is weathered out, that is the attempt.
What the 8-day expedition adds
The 8-day winter expedition is a different proposition. It builds in a snow-skills training day, several 3,000–4,000 m objectives to acclimatise on, a reserve day for weather, and a helmet alongside the crampons and ice axe.
In practice that means two things: you arrive at the summit day acclimatised and practised rather than learning as you go, and a bad-weather morning costs you a day rather than the trip.

How to tell which one you should book
Book the three-day if you have a short trip, you are a fit hill walker, you accept that the summit is one attempt with no second chance, and you are content to learn crampon technique on the day.
Book the expedition if the mountain is the reason you are coming to Morocco, if you want to be taught winter skills properly, or if you would be genuinely disappointed to go home without standing on the top. Weather does not negotiate, and the only real defence against it is spare days.
What you need to bring either way
The one item that catches people out is footwear: you need boots stiff enough to take crampons. You can bring your own or hire them in Imlil, along with a sleeping bag from our shop there.
Beyond that: warm insulating layers, a windproof shell, warm gloves and hat, sunglasses and goggles, a headlamp, and travel insurance that covers trekking to 4,200 m in winter conditions including mountain rescue.

- Can you climb Mount Toubkal in winter?
- Yes, with a guide and winter equipment. From December to March the upper route is snow-covered and you climb on crampons with an ice axe. It is not technical climbing, but it is a serious cold-weather mountain day.
- Is 3 days enough for a winter Toubkal trek?
- It is enough for one summit attempt: a valley night, a refuge night and a pre-dawn push. What it does not give you is a training day, acclimatisation days or a reserve day for weather.
- Do I need mountaineering experience?
- No previous crampon experience is required on the 3-day, because your guide instructs you before the summit day. You do need good hill fitness and to be comfortable with long, cold walking days.
- Is winter equipment included?
- Crampons and an ice axe are supplied on both winter programmes, and the 8-day expedition also supplies a helmet. Stiff mountaineering boots are not included and can be hired in Imlil.
- What if the weather stops the summit?
- The guide turns the group around. On the 3-day there is no reserve day, so the attempt ends there; the 8-day expedition holds a spare day for exactly this.
- When is winter on Toubkal?
- Broadly December to March. Snow cover and avalanche conditions vary week to week, which is why winter departures are confirmed with you before you travel.
