Full description

Aït Bougmez is known in Morocco as the Happy Valley — a wide, unusually flat valley floor of irrigated fields and walnut trees, ringed by the Central High Atlas. It is farming country rather than climbing country, which is exactly why it works as a trek.

Days are shorter than on a summit itinerary. You walk between villages, climb into the side valleys and passes above the fields for the views, and come back down to a gîte at night. It suits families, first-time trekkers and anyone who would rather see how people live at altitude than stand on a peak.

It also works as the acclimatisation and cultural half of a longer trip: several travellers combine it with the M'Goun summit.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech → Aït Bougmez

The long transfer east across the Atlas, arriving in the valley for a first night in a village gîte.

  2. Day 2

    Valley floor and villages

An easier first walking day along the cultivated valley, between mud-brick hamlets and irrigation channels.

  3. Day 3

    Above the valley

Climb to a viewpoint or pass above the fields for the wider view of the Central High Atlas, returning to the valley to sleep.

  4. Day 4

    Return to Marrakech

Morning in the valley and the drive back to your hotel.

Good to know before you book

  • This is the typical shape of the route. Exact villages, walking hours and viewpoints are confirmed in writing with your quote.
  • It is a valley trek, not a summit trek. If you want the 4,000 m ridge, look at the M'Goun summit itinerary instead.
  • The drive from Marrakech is long in each direction; a three-day version leaves very little walking time.
  • The photographs on this page are our own High Atlas pictures and are not presented as Aït Bougmez. Region-specific photography is being added.

Booking with Toubkal Views

  • You book directly with our local Marrakech team — no booking platform in between.
  • Questions answered on WhatsApp before and during your trip.
  • Your hotel pickup point and time are confirmed with you in writing before the tour.
  • Everything included and not included is listed on this page before you enquire.

Why trek with Toubkal Views

More than 15 accredited guides

Our treks and tours are led by a network of over 15 accredited guides who live and work in Morocco, most of them from the valleys around Imlil and Marrakech.

Mountain equipment rental in Imlil

We have our own mountain-equipment rental shop in Imlil, so trekking and mountain gear is available to rent close to the start of many High Atlas routes. Rental is arranged separately and is never automatically included in a tour price.

Responsible mule welfare

Mules carry equipment on our High Atlas routes. We treat them as working partners whose care and condition are part of running a mountain trip properly.

SPANA cooperation in Imlil

We cooperate with SPANA's animal-welfare work in the Imlil area, which supports the working animals of the High Atlas.

Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable for children?

The walking days are moderate and can be shortened, which makes it one of the more family-workable multi-day treks we run. Tell us the ages and we will say honestly whether the itinerary fits.

Why is it called the Happy Valley?

It is the nickname the valley picked up because of its unusually broad, green, well-watered floor — rare at this altitude in the Atlas, where most valleys are narrow and steep.

Can I combine it with M'Goun?

Yes. The valley is the normal approach to the M'Goun massif, so the two run naturally as one longer trip. Ask us for the combined itinerary.

Why can only groups of four or more book online?

The guide, mule support and the vehicle from Marrakech cost the same whether two people walk or eight. From four travellers the published €390 per person works honestly; below that we price the departure individually rather than pretend a group rate applies. Send your dates and we reply with a written quote.
