What the Agafay ride is like
Agafay is the closest desert landscape to Marrakech: pale hills, dry riverbeds and very little vegetation, with the Atlas range on the horizon. On horseback it opens up in a way it does not on foot, because you cover ground.
It is also a different experience from a camel in the same place. The pace is quicker, you go further, and you are steering rather than being led. If you have ridden before and want to feel like you are actually riding, this is the one.
It is exposed. There is little shade and the light is strong, which is glorious for photographs and demanding in midsummer — the sensible months are spring, autumn and winter, or the ends of the day.
What the Atlas ride is like
The Atlas ride is in the foothills of the High Atlas, an hour or so from Marrakech. The scenery is agricultural and green — terraces, walnut and fruit trees, irrigation channels, mud-brick hamlets — with the mountains rising behind.
It is a one-hour ride, so it is the shorter of the two in the saddle, and it is a good fit if riding is one part of your day rather than the whole point of it. The lunch afterwards is in the same valley.
The trade-off is variety of ground rather than distance: you are following valley trails and village paths instead of ranging across open desert.
