Most travellers do the desert as a loop and drive the same road twice. This itinerary does not: you start in Marrakech, cross the Atlas, spend time in the Sahara and finish in Fes, so every kilometre shows you something new and you save a full day of backtracking.
The southern half is the classic kasbah route — Tizi n'Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades hairpins and the Todra Gorge — before the road runs out into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a camel ride, a desert camp and a dune sunrise.
The northern half is the part few short tours reach: the fossil town of Erfoud, the Ziz Valley palm canyon, the Middle Atlas cedar forests around Ifrane and Azrou with their Barbary macaques, and finally the arrival into Fes, Morocco's oldest imperial city.
Day 1
Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley
Tizi n'Tichka pass, a walk through Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses, arriving in the Dades Valley for the night.
Day 2
Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Morning in the Dades gorge, the Todra cliffs, lunch in the palm groves and the drive east. Sunset camel ride into Erg Chebbi and a night in a desert camp.
Day 3
Sahara day: dunes, villages and nomad country
Sunrise over the dunes, then a full day around Merzouga — Khamlia and its Gnawa music, the Rissani area and the dry lake plains — with a second night in the desert region.
Day 4
Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Fes region
North through the Ziz gorges and palm canyon, lunch in Midelt, then the cedar forests of Azrou and Ifrane before reaching Fes in the evening.

Drop-off at your Fes accommodation. If you would like a licensed Fes medina guide for the day, we can arrange one for an extra fee.

The Merzouga to Fes leg is the longest, roughly seven to eight hours of driving spread over the day with stops at the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forest.
No. Driving, transport and accommodation are included; a licensed local guide in Fes is optional and paid separately, and we are happy to book one for you.
The standard itinerary includes one night in a dune camp and one night in the Merzouga area. If you prefer two camp nights, tell us and we will adjust it.
