Full description

Not everybody comes to Morocco for the Sahara. This itinerary trades the long desert drives for the two landscapes that sit closest to Marrakech and are usually rushed: the High Atlas, where Berber villages cling to terraced hillsides, and Essaouira, the windswept Atlantic port with its white ramparts and blue boats.

You begin with the mountains — the Ourika and Imlil side of the Atlas, walnut groves, mule tracks and a night in a mountain guesthouse — then cross to the kasbah country around Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate before turning west.

The last part of the week belongs to the coast: two nights in Essaouira with free time to walk the ramparts, eat grilled fish at the port and simply slow down, before an easy drive back to Marrakech with an argan cooperative stop.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech → High Atlas valleys

Into the mountains for viewpoints, a Berber village walk and a night in a mountain guesthouse.

  2. Day 2

    Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou

Over the passes to the kasbah route, an unhurried walk through Ait Ben Haddou and a night in the area.

  3. Day 3

    Ouarzazate → back west

Kasbahs and the Ouarzazate area in the morning, then west with a night on the road.

  4. Day 4

    → Essaouira

Drive to the Atlantic through argan country, arriving in Essaouira in time for sunset on the ramparts.

  5. Day 5

    Essaouira

Free day: medina, port, beach, and the option of a coastal camel or quad ride at extra cost.

  6. Day 6

    Essaouira → Marrakech

Argan cooperative stop and return to Marrakech in the afternoon.

  • Driving distances in Morocco are long; the itinerary is paced so each day includes stops, viewpoints and time to walk around.
  • Monument entrance fees are not included and are paid locally, so you only pay for the sites you choose to enter.
  • Accommodation is selected for comfort and location; we confirm the standard with you before booking and never name a specific hotel until it is reserved.
  • Anything not listed as included may require an extra payment — we will tell you the cost before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tour go to the Sahara?

No. It is designed as a mountains-and-coast alternative. If you want the dunes, our 4-day or 7-day itineraries from Marrakech include them.

How hard is the mountain walking?

Easy. The village walks are one to two hours on gentle tracks; nothing technical and no equipment needed.

Is Essaouira good for families?

Very — it is flat, walkable, has a long beach and is far cooler than Marrakech in summer.

Can we add a night in Marrakech at the start?

Yes, we can book accommodation and arrange airport transfers around the tour.
