Paragliding vs Hot Air Balloon in Marrakech: Which Flight Should You Book?

September 4, 2026 · 8 min read

Hot air balloons inflating on the plain outside Marrakech at first light

Two very different ways to see Marrakech from the air. An honest, first-party comparison of the experience, the scenery, the adrenaline and who each one actually suits.

They are not versions of the same thing

Travellers usually arrive at this question because both show up under "Marrakech from the air". In practice they share almost nothing except that your feet leave the ground.

A balloon flight is a dawn ritual: an early pickup, the burners, a slow vertical lift over the plain north of the city, and a drift wherever the wind takes the envelope. A tandem paraglide is an afternoon or morning half day: you drive out to the Kik Plateau south-west of the city, run a few steps down a slope with a pilot on your back, and fly a wing.

The comparison, honestly

The table is built only from things we can verify about our own products. Where a figure is not verified — flight altitude, driving times, exact durations of a balloon morning — it is left out rather than estimated.

What each one feels like

A balloon morning is mostly anticipation: the dark drive, the roar of the burners, the envelope filling, then a lift so gentle you notice it by looking down. Once you are up, nothing much happens — and that is the appeal. It is a photograph you stand inside for a while.

A paraglide is compressed. Everything happens in the two minutes around launch: the wing comes up, the pilot says walk, you walk, and then the ground drops away and it is suddenly very quiet. The rest of the flight is calm, close to the terrain, and over quickly. People remember the launch.

Which to book

Book the balloon if you are travelling as a couple or a family who want a serene dawn, if you don't want to run anywhere, and if a shared basket does not bother you. Book the paraglide if you want the mountains rather than the plain, if you like the idea of being flown by someone rather than carried, and if a half day suits your itinerary better than a pre-dawn start.

If you have time for both, they do not overlap. They are two different landscapes, at two different times of day, on two different sides of the city.

Frequently asked questions

Is paragliding or a hot air balloon better in Marrakech?
They suit different people. Paragliding is active, mountain-facing and around 20 minutes in the air from the Kik Plateau; a balloon is a calm dawn flight over the plain. Neither replaces the other.
Is paragliding in Marrakech scary?
The launch is the intense part — a few steps down a slope with the pilot behind you. Once the wing is flying, most people describe it as calm and quiet.
Do both fly in the same place?
No. Balloons fly over the plain outside Marrakech; our paragliding launches from the Kik Plateau south-west of the city, towards the High Atlas.
