Toubkal in 2 Days or 3? Choosing the Right Ascent
August 2, 2026 · 7 min read

The two-day climb is the cheapest and fastest. The three-day Azzaden route summits more people. Here is how to decide.
The 2-day classic
Imlil to the refuge on day one, summit and return on day two. It is the standard itinerary sold from Marrakech, it costs the least and it works well if you already hike regularly and live somewhere with hills.
The catch is altitude. You go from 1,740 m to 4,167 m in about 24 hours. Headaches at the refuge are common and a minority of trekkers turn back on the summit ridge.
The 3-day Azzaden route
Adding one night in the Azzaden valley at around 1,850 m gives your body a full extra day to adapt, and the crossing of the Tizi Mzik pass is far prettier than repeating the Mizane valley twice.
In our own groups the three-day version summits noticeably more people, and guests almost always say the night in the Berber gite was the highlight of the trip.
Winter versus summer
From December to March, Toubkal is a snow climb: crampons, ice axe and a guide who checks avalanche conditions. April to October it is a long walk on scree with no technical sections.
Whatever the season, start the summit push before dawn — afternoon cloud and wind build fast on the ridge.
What we recommend
First time above 3,500 m, travelling with a partner of mixed fitness, or visiting in winter: take three days. Experienced hiker on a tight schedule: two days is fine, and you can still be back in Marrakech for dinner on day two.
