This winter High Atlas expedition from Marrakech provides a structured alpine trekking and snow skills experience for those wishing to tackle Toubkal in winter conditions. This eight-day itinerary is designed for trekkers who want to transition from basic hiking to winter mountaineering under the supervision of a licensed guide. You will progress through multiple high-altitude objectives and complete a comprehensive training day before attempting the main summit.
The journey begins with return private transport from Marrakech to Imlil, where you will complete a kit check and a briefing. Day two features an acclimatisation walk up to 2,600 metres and equipment fitting, followed by a dedicated training day to practice essential techniques like cramponing, ice axe use, and self-arrest. After moving up to the winter refuge at 3,207 metres, you will attempt a 3,500 to 4,000-metre peak to prepare for the final pre-dawn climb to the 4,167-metre summit.
Your logistics are fully managed throughout the expedition, with refuge or Berber gite accommodation and all mountain meals prepared by an on-site cook. Muleteers and mules transport your main luggage to the refuge, and the team provides your technical gear including crampons, helmets, and ice axes. Operating as a private booking or a small group of up to 12 people, the climb is led by a federation-licensed guide who can instruct in English, French, Spanish, Berber, and Arabic.
Running from December to March, this expedition is graded as a strenuous winter mountaineering challenge rather than a standard hike. You must bring personal items such as a warm sleeping bag, goggles, a headlamp with spare batteries, three litres of water capacity, and stiff B2 or B3 mountaineering boots. Since weather and avalanche risks dictate daily route decisions, a built-in reserve day is included to maximize your safety and success.
