Full description

The Palmeraie is the belt of palm groves on the northern edge of Marrakech: sandy tracks, irrigation channels, thousands of date palms and, in among them, the camel camps that have worked this ground for generations. It is the closest place to the city where you can ride and it takes half a day, not a full one.

You are collected from your hotel and driven out to the grove. Camels kneel to be mounted, a handler walks with the line the whole way, and the ride follows sandy tracks between the palms. It is a walking pace — no experience needed, no galloping, nothing to control yourself.

Midway there is a stop at a Berber tent for mint tea, which is where most of the photographs happen. Turbans are usually offered before you set off; wear one or don't, as you prefer.

This suits travellers with one free morning, families with older children, and anyone who wants the camel photograph without committing to a desert day. If you want the same ride against a desert horizon instead of palms, our Agafay camel products do that.

Good to know before you book

  • The Palmeraie is palm grove on the city edge, not desert. If you want a desert horizon, book an Agafay camel ride instead.
  • Camels are led at walking pace by a handler; you do not steer or control the animal.
  • Tell us about back or hip problems and any pregnancy before booking — mounting and dismounting involve the camel kneeling and rising.
  • Local photographers may offer prints at the tent; that is optional and paid on the spot.
