Merzouga sits at the western edge of the Sahara, below the tall orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. This guide explains where it is, how you get there, what happens on a desert night, and how to pick the trip length that suits your time.
Merzouga is a small village in south-east Morocco, at the foot of Erg Chebbi — the tallest and best known dune field in the country. Almost everything travellers picture when they imagine the Moroccan Sahara (high orange dunes, a camel line at sunset, a camp under an enormous sky) happens here rather than in the stony deserts closer to Marrakech.

Where Merzouga is, and how far it really is
Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech by road. There is no fast route: the drive crosses the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then follows the kasbah road east through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge before the last flat run across the hamada.

How many days you need
- Two days gets you a desert night, but at Zagora rather than Merzouga — see Merzouga or Zagora.
- Three days is the shortest realistic Merzouga round trip from Marrakech, and the most popular choice.
- Four days adds a slower pace, or a second night in the dunes.
- Five days or more lets you finish in Fes instead of doubling back, or add the Draa Valley.

What actually happens at the dunes
Arrival at Merzouga is normally late afternoon. You leave the vehicle at the edge of the erg, meet the camels and ride roughly an hour into the dunes as the light drops — or transfer by 4x4 if you would rather not ride. Dinner at camp is tagine and bread, usually with drumming afterwards, and the night sky is exceptional because there is almost no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres.
Sunrise is the second reason people come. Camps wake guests early so you can climb the dune behind the tents before the sun clears the Algerian horizon.

The stops on the way are part of the trip
The road to Merzouga is not dead time. It passes the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and the kasbah route, then the hairpins and cliffs of the Dades and Todra gorges. Travellers who only budget for the dunes are often surprised that these are the photographs they show at home.
When to go
Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the comfortable windows. July and August are extremely hot in the middle of the day, though desert nights stay bearable, and winter days are pleasant with genuinely cold nights. The month-by-month detail is in the best time to visit Merzouga.

- Where exactly is Merzouga?
- Merzouga is a village in south-east Morocco, close to the Algerian border, at the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field. It is roughly 560 km by road from Marrakech and about 470 km from Fes.
- Can I visit Merzouga on a day trip from Marrakech?
- No. The drive is nine to ten hours each way across the High Atlas and the kasbah route, so a day trip is not possible. The shortest realistic round trip from Marrakech is three days.
- Is Merzouga better than Zagora?
- For dune scenery, yes — Erg Chebbi is far taller and more dramatic. Zagora is chosen when travellers only have two days, because it is several hours closer to Marrakech.
- Do I have to ride a camel?
- No. The camel ride into the dunes is the traditional arrival, but we can transfer you to the camp by 4x4 instead if you prefer, and you will still be at the camp for sunset.
- How cold does the desert get at night?
- Desert nights are much cooler than the days all year, and in winter they can be close to freezing. Camps provide blankets, but bring a warm layer whatever the season.
- Is there electricity and Wi-Fi at the camps?
- Most camps have lighting and charging near the main tent, and some offer Wi-Fi around reception. Mobile signal in the dunes is limited, so plan for an offline night.
- Is Merzouga suitable for children?
- Yes, with realistic expectations about the driving. Camel rides can be shortened and camps are used to families. Tell us the ages when you enquire and we will pace the itinerary accordingly.
