Merzouga or Zagora? Choosing Your Moroccan Desert Night
Zagora is closer, Merzouga has the tall dunes. This comparison sets out the driving hours, scenery and cost so you can pick the right one for the days you have.
Two desert destinations are sold from Marrakech, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing between them is really a choice between distance and dunes.

Choose Zagora if
- You have two free days and no more.
- The point of the trip is a camel ride, a camp night and stars rather than photographs of tall dunes.
- You want the Draa Valley, which is one of the largest palm oases in Morocco and is genuinely beautiful.
- You are travelling with small children and want to minimise hours in the vehicle.
Choose Merzouga if
- You want the classic Sahara dune landscape — Erg Chebbi is what people picture.
- You can give the trip three days, ideally four.
- You want a full desert day: sandboarding, a 4x4 circuit, Khamlia, Rissani.
- You are continuing to Fes afterwards, in which case the desert is on your way rather than a detour.
What the extra hours actually buy
The honest summary: Zagora gives you a desert night; Merzouga gives you the desert. The dune field at Erg Chebbi is a different order of scenery — 22 km of sand rising well above the plain, described in the Erg Chebbi guide. Zagora's landscape is flatter and stonier with modest dunes near the camps.
If you have three days, we almost always suggest Merzouga. With two, Zagora is the better trip because the alternative would be twenty hours of driving for one sunset.
What is the same
Camp comfort is broadly similar in both places — standard camps with beds, blankets and shared bathrooms, upgraded camps with private facilities. Frequently asked questions
- Is Merzouga or Zagora better?
- Merzouga has far bigger dunes and is the classic Sahara landscape; Zagora is several hours closer to Marrakech. Choose Zagora for a two-day trip and Merzouga if you have three days or more.
- How much closer is Zagora?
- Zagora is about six to seven hours from Marrakech versus nine to ten for Merzouga, which is why it can be done as a two-day trip.
- Are the dunes at Zagora real dunes?
- There are dunes near the camps, but they are small compared with Erg Chebbi. Zagora's landscape is mostly stony desert and the Draa palm groves.
- Is the camp experience the same at both?
- Broadly yes — beds, blankets, tagine dinner, music and stars, with upgraded en-suite camps available in both areas.
- Which is cheaper?
- Zagora, because it is shorter. Our two-day Zagora trip has a list price of €119 per person and the three-day Merzouga trip €145.
- Is Agafay an alternative to either?
- Only in the sense that it is a desert landscape near Marrakech. Agafay is stony rather than sandy and works as an evening or overnight trip, not a Sahara journey.
