Ouzoud is the waterfall people mean when they talk about the falls near Marrakech: a wide curtain of water dropping in stages into a green gorge in the Middle Atlas foothills, loud, cool and completely unlike the dry country you drove through to reach it. This is a full day out of the city, built around walking the falls rather than photographing them from the car park for ten minutes.

You are collected from your hotel or riad and driven north-east out of Marrakech through olive country. At Ouzoud the day starts at the upper viewpoints, where you see the whole drop at once, then follows the path down through olive trees and terraces to the pools at the bottom. It is a walking day — the descent is on stone steps and dirt paths, and you come back up the same way, at your pace.

At the bottom, small wooden boats take visitors close enough to the falls to feel the spray. Barbary macaques live in the trees along the path and are usually visible on the way down; they are wild animals living in the gorge, not part of a show, and we ask travellers not to feed them. Lunch is at one of the terrace restaurants built above the water, where you eat looking straight at the falls.

2. On the road

   Drive to the Middle Atlas foothills

   You leave the city through olive plantations and farmland towards the Ouzoud plateau, with a stop on the way.

3. On arrival

   The upper viewpoints

   Your guide takes you to the terraces above the gorge where the whole waterfall is visible in one view.

4. Late morning

   Walk down to the pools

   You descend through olive trees and terraced paths to the base of the falls, watching for macaques in the trees.

5. At the base

   Boats and the spray

   Time at the pools, with the option of the small boats that go in close under the water.

6. Lunch

   Terrace above the falls

   Lunch at one of the restaurants built into the gorge side, looking at the water.

7. Afternoon

   Return to Marrakech

   You walk back up at your own pace and drive back to your accommodation.
