Most people rush Toubkal in two days. This three-day route takes you the beautiful way instead: from Imlil you cross the Tizi Mzik pass into the Azzaden valley, a green corridor of walnut groves, irrigation channels and stone hamlets that few day-trippers ever see.
Night one is in a family-run Berber gite in Tizi Oussem with a home-cooked tagine, which also gives your body a gentle first day at altitude. Day two climbs steadily to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 m via the Tizi n'Ouagane ridge, with the whole massif opening up in front of you.
On day three you leave before dawn for the summit of Jbel Toubkal, 4,167 m, the highest point in North Africa. After the summit photos you descend the Mizane valley to Imlil for a late lunch and drive back to Marrakech.
Day 1 - 08:00
Marrakech to Imlil
Drive through Asni and the Kik plateau to the trailhead at 1,740 m.
Day 1 - 10:30
Tizi Mzik to Azzaden
5 hours over the 2,489 m pass down to Tizi Oussem. Dinner and night in a Berber gite.
Day 2 - 08:00
Azzaden to the refuge
6 hours climbing to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 m with lunch on the trail.
Day 3 - 05:00
Summit at 4,167 m
3-4 hours to the top for sunrise, then descend to Imlil.
Day 3 - 16:00
Back to Marrakech
Transfer and hotel drop-off.
The extra night at 1,850 m before the refuge dramatically reduces altitude sickness and raises summit success, and the Azzaden valley is the most scenic approach.
Around 5 to 6 hours on days one and two, and 7 to 8 hours on summit day including the descent.
Yes, hot showers at the gite and basic showers at the refuge.
