The Zat is the valley travellers ask for once they have heard that Ourika gets busy. It runs into the High Atlas east of Marrakech, and because it is not on the standard excursion circuit it still feels like farming country rather than a day-trip destination: terraced fields along the river, walnut and fig trees, villages of packed earth, and mule tracks doing the work roads do elsewhere.

The day is deliberately unhurried. You drive out of the city, follow the river up into the valley, and spend the middle of the day walking short sections of the riverside paths with a guide who can explain the irrigation, the crops and the seasons. Where the track is rough, walking is the point rather than a problem.

Lunch is a home-cooked meal in the valley rather than a restaurant with a car park — tagine, bread and mint tea, eaten where it was cooked. If your group wants a longer walk, your guide can extend it; if you would rather sit by the river, that is a legitimate way to spend the afternoon here.
