Zat Valley, Morocco: A Quieter Atlas Valley Near Marrakech

A practical guide to the Zat valley: villages, walking, Zat vs Ourika, and how to visit in a day from Marrakech.
Short answer: the Zat valley is a High Atlas river valley east of Marrakech, much less visited than Ourika. A day there is about farming villages, terraced fields and walks on riverside paths rather than sights or cafés. Toubkal Views runs it as a full-day trip from your Marrakech hotel or riad for €47.03 per person booked directly (public rate €49.50).
What the Zat valley is like
The Zat runs into the High Atlas east of Marrakech. It is not on the standard excursion circuit, so it still feels like farming country: terraced fields along the river, walnut and fig trees, villages of packed earth, and mule tracks doing the work that roads do elsewhere.
Facilities are basic. There are no riverside café strips or souvenir rows like in Ourika. For many travellers that is exactly the reason to go.
Zat or Ourika?
| Zat valley | Ourika valley | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Quiet farming villages, few visitors | Busier, river cafés, popular at weekends |
| Main draw | Walking between fields and villages | Setti Fatma waterfalls, river cafés |
| Facilities | Basic | More developed |
| Our trip | Zat valley day trip — full day | Ourika and Setti Fatma — 8 hours, or the half-day Ourika trip |
Choose the Zat if you want landscape and daily life without crowds, or if you have already seen Ourika. Choose Ourika if the waterfalls are the point.
How a day in the Zat runs
Times are agreed for your hotel and date rather than published as fixed hours.
- Morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech.
- East towards the Zat. You leave the city on the eastern road and turn up into the valley.
- First walk. A guided walk on riverside paths between fields and villages; your guide explains the irrigation, the crops and the seasons.
- Valley lunch. A home-cooked meal in a village house — only if arranged in advance.
- Afternoon. Either a longer section of the valley on foot, or time by the river.
- Late afternoon return to Marrakech.
How much walking is there?
As much or as little as your group wants. The standard day has short guided walks; the guide can extend them into a proper valley hike. Paths can be uneven and, depending on the season, there may be shallow river crossings.
What is included
Included: round-trip transport from Marrakech, driver for the day, a local Berber guide for the valley walks, bottled water.
Not included: lunch (a family lunch can be arranged if you ask in advance), personal expenses and extra drinks, gratuities, travel insurance.
Who it suits — and who should choose something else
- Suits: repeat visitors to Marrakech, walkers who prefer quiet paths, families with children in sensible shoes (tell us their ages and we keep walks short).
- Choose something else if you want waterfalls (Ourika), a classic Toubkal-view village (the Imlil day trip), or several valleys in one day (the 3 Valleys day trip).
What to bring
