Is Agafay actually a desert?
Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand desert. Expect grey-gold hills, dry riverbeds and wide valleys with the Atlas mountains behind them. If you have come to Morocco for tall orange dunes, those are in the Sahara, several hundred kilometres and at least a two-night round trip away.
For an evening out of Marrakech, that difference matters less than photographs suggest. After dark you are looking at a fire, a lit camp and the sky — and Agafay delivers that within an easy drive of the city, which the Sahara cannot.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
Agafay begins just southwest of Marrakech, and the drive is comfortably under an hour from most central hotels and riads. We do not publish an exact number of minutes, because the real drive depends on where you are staying, when you leave and the traffic on the way out of the city — and on an evening trip, a promised time you then miss is worse than no promise at all.
What we do confirm with you is the pickup point and the pickup time for your date. If your riad sits deep in the medina where a vehicle cannot reach the door, we agree the nearest accessible meeting point in advance rather than leaving you to work it out at dusk.
What happens during an Agafay evening
The shape of the evening is consistent. You arrive at the camp while there is still light, which is deliberate — the hills look completely different in the last hour of the day, and it is the only time you can walk out to a viewpoint and see where you are. Dinner follows at the camp. Afterwards there is time outside: a fire, low lighting, and the sky.
We do not print a fixed menu. Camps adjust what they cook by season, and a menu published in advance is a promise made by us about someone else's kitchen. Dinner is Moroccan; tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you book and we pass them on before the evening.
What we will not do is describe a schedule minute by minute. Sunset time moves through the year, and so does the point at which everyone drifts from the table to the fire.
Dinner, or dinner with entertainment?
This is the real fork in the road, and it decides which Agafay evening suits you.
One version is quiet. Dinner, a fire, lamps turned down, and time to sit outside and look up. That is how our Agafay Desert Stargazing & Berber Dinner is built: the evening is organised so the sky stays visible rather than around a performance.

Live Moroccan music and the fire show
On the evenings that include a programme, you get live Moroccan music during or after the meal and a fire show at the camp. Both are performed for the camp's guests that evening, not privately for your table — we say that plainly because "private dinner" listings elsewhere often blur it.
We do not publish how long the music or the fire show runs. That varies by evening, and a duration we cannot control is not a number worth printing.
Stargazing: what is realistic, and what nobody can promise
Agafay is genuinely dark. There is no town nearby, and once the camp lamps are turned down your eyes adjust and the sky opens up. That is the honest case for going out at night rather than eating in the medina.
What no operator can promise is a specific sky. Whether you see the Milky Way depends on the moon phase, cloud and haze on your date. We will tell you what the sky is likely to do around your dates if you ask, and we will not sell you a guarantee that the weather has to keep.
If a telescope or a guide with astronomy training matters to you, ask before booking and we will tell you plainly whether we can arrange it for your evening rather than implying it comes as standard.
What to wear to an Agafay dinner
Bring a warm layer. This is the single most common regret we hear. Clear desert skies mean cold nights in every season, including summer, and the temperature drops fast once the sun is down on open stone.
Closed shoes are worth it too if you want to walk out to a viewpoint after dark; the ground is stony and uneven. Otherwise dress as you would for dinner out — there is no dress code at the camps we use.
Standard or private transport?
On the standard evening you travel on shared transport: the vehicle collects several bookings around the city before heading out, and does the same in reverse on the way back. It is the reason the evening costs what it does.
On the private evening the vehicle is yours for the booking. You leave when you are ready, you do not wait for other pickups, and you come back when your group wants to. The camp, the dinner and the show are still shared with other guests — only the transport is private.
If you are two people on a tight budget, the shared evening is the sensible choice. If you are a family with young children, a group staying together, or you simply do not want to spend part of your evening collecting strangers, the private vehicle is what you are paying the difference for.
Who an Agafay dinner suits
Couples: it works well as the one evening of a Marrakech trip that is not spent in the medina. The quieter stargazing evening tends to suit couples better than the show version.
Families: children are welcome at the camps we use. Tell us the ages when you book so we can plan the return drive around bedtime rather than after it.
Groups of friends: the evening with live music and a fire show is the more sociable of the two, and a private vehicle keeps the group together from door to door.
Solo travellers: the shared evening is the easier one — you travel with other guests and eat at a camp with other people, rather than paying for a private vehicle on your own.
Is an evening trip to Agafay worth it?
It is worth it if you want a change of register: one night of your trip spent somewhere quiet, dark and open, a short drive from a very loud city. It is worth it if the sky matters to you, or if you want an evening that is an event rather than another dinner.
It is less worth it if your only free evening is in bad weather, if you are travelling with someone who will be cold and miserable outdoors, or if you were expecting Sahara dunes. In those cases we would rather tell you before you book than after.
