Ouarzazate sits on the far side of the Atlas where the mountains stop and the pre-Sahara begins, and that position is exactly why the film industry settled here: an hour's drive gives you desert, oasis, gorge and kasbah without leaving the province. The town's studios have hosted large historical productions for decades, and standing sets remain on the lots.

The day crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass with viewpoint stops, then drops into the southern landscape of flat-roofed earthen towns and palm valleys. You visit the Atlas Film Studios, where the sets are the attraction rather than any pretence of a working tour, and the Taourirt kasbah in town — a real Glaoui-era earthen palace whose narrow passages and rooms show how these buildings functioned.

Aït Ben Haddou is on the same road and can be included, either as a photo stop or as a proper visit to the ksar. Tell us which you want when you enquire, because it changes how long the day runs.
