Why Toubkal is busy — and why that is fine

Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa, it is close to Marrakech and it can be done in a long weekend. All three facts are good, and together they make it the busiest mountain in the country. We run it constantly and we are not talking anyone out of it.

But if what you want from a mountain is emptiness, popularity is the thing standing in your way, and no route choice on that massif fully solves it.

What changes when you go east

The Central High Atlas around Aït Bougmez and the M'Goun massif is the same mountain range, several hours further from Marrakech. The distance is exactly what keeps it quiet: it cannot be done as a weekend, so it does not attract weekend volume.

The practical difference on the ground is fewer trekkers, fewer facilities, and more of the walking passing through working farmland and high pasture rather than trekking infrastructure. Whether that is better depends on what you came for.

Quiet has a cost, and it is time

Going east costs you a road day in each direction. That is the honest price of the quiet, and it is why our valley trek is four days and the summit trek is six rather than the two- and three-day products we sell on the Toubkal side.

If you only have a few days in Morocco, the Toubkal massif is the better use of them. If you have a week, the Central High Atlas is where the week is best spent.

Will I really see fewer people?

In our experience, substantially fewer than on the Toubkal approach in the same weeks. We will not put a number on it, because trekker traffic varies by month and by route.

Is quieter also less safe?

It is remoter, which means help is further away and the guide's judgement matters more. Every trek we run in the region goes with a certified mountain guide, a cook and mule support rather than as a self-supported walk.

Can I combine both?

Yes — the nine-day Toubkal and M'Goun journey does exactly that, with a long road transfer between the two massifs.
