Mount Toubkal

Mount Toubkal in One Day vs Two Days: Which Trek Format Fits You?

16. September 2026 · 7 min read

Both formats climb the same mountain by the same route. The difference is whether you sleep on it. Here is an honest comparison of the one-day ascent and the two-day trek, so you can pick the one that matches your legs and your trip.

The same mountain, two different days

Both of our shortest Toubkal itineraries use the normal route from the Imlil valley, and both finish on the same 4,167 m summit. Neither is a better mountain experience in the abstract, and we will not tell you one is superior: they solve different problems.

The one-day ascent removes the night on the mountain, which makes the walking day very long and removes any acclimatisation. The two-day trek adds a night at the refuge at 3,207 m, which shortens each walking day and gives your body some time high before the summit push. Everything else follows from that single difference.

Which one fits you

Choose the one-day ascent if you are currently fit, you already walk long steep days, you have a single day in Marrakech you are willing to spend entirely on this, and the summit attempt itself is the point. It is the format for people who train.

Choose the two-day trek if you want the best realistic chance of standing on the summit, if you have not been high before, if you want to see the refuge and the valley properly, or if you would rather enjoy the mountain than race it. The night at 3,207 m is the single most useful thing you can add to a Toubkal attempt after basic fitness.

If you can spare a third or fourth day, the longer itineraries add genuine acclimatisation rather than just more walking — which is a different conversation, and one the chooser handles better than an article can.

What does not change between them

The summit is never guaranteed on either format, and the guide may stop the ascent or require the group to turn back when weather, mountain conditions, pace, fitness or safety make continuing inappropriate. Both are guided by our own licensed mountain guides from the Imlil valley, and both include the transfer from Marrakech.

Neither format is a technical climb in snow-free conditions, and neither removes the altitude. Above roughly 3,000 m your body decides how the day goes more than your training does, which is the honest reason we keep recommending the longer itineraries to people who have never been that high.

Häufige Fragen

Is one day enough for Mount Toubkal?
It is enough to reach the summit and return, and we run it. It is not enough to acclimatise, and it asks a great deal of your legs. For most travellers the two-day trek is the more realistic way to reach the top.
Is the two-day Toubkal trek easier?
The walking is split across two days with a night at the refuge at 3,207 m, so each day is shorter and your body has some time at altitude. It is still a hard mountain trek, and the summit is still not guaranteed.
How fit should I be for the one-day climb?
Strong current hiking fitness is required. You should already be walking long, steep days, and be able to descend for over two hours after roughly five hours of climbing.
Does the one-day trek include accommodation?
No. There is no overnight at all: you leave Marrakech at 04:00, climb and descend the same day, have dinner in Imlil and return to Marrakech that night.
Where does the one-day trek start?
The walking starts in the Imlil valley, reached by an approximately two-hour transfer from Marrakech that is included in the price.
Can I start from Marrakech?
Yes. Both formats start in Marrakech and include the transfer to the Imlil valley and back.
How much does the one-day Toubkal trek cost?
The sportive group departure is €117 per person — €111.15 booking direct with us, and the private option is €162 per person — €153.90 booking direct with us.
What is included in the one-day ascent?
The Marrakech departure and return transfer, the guided ascent and descent with a licensed mountain guide, dinner in Imlil and the Toubkal National Park access. Personal clothing, boots, equipment rental and insurance are not included.
What happens if I cannot continue?
You tell your guide. The guide may stop the ascent or turn the group back when weather, mountain conditions, pace, fitness or safety make continuing inappropriate, and emergency response support, including access to an intervention team and ambulance support, is available when required.
Is the summit guaranteed on either option?
No. No operator can guarantee the summit of Mount Toubkal on any itinerary, and we do not.
Can I switch to the two-day option?
Yes, as long as we can confirm dates. Because the one-day ascent is request-to-book, the conversation about which format suits you happens before anything is confirmed.
Which option gives more time on the mountain?
The two-day trek. It includes a night at the refuge at 3,207 m and spreads the walking across two days, so you spend far longer high up than the single-day push allows.
