Maximale Höhe

Ighil M'Goun, about 4,070 m

Highlights

  • Ighil M'Goun, about 4,070 m — Morocco's second-highest massif
  • Walk-in through the Aït Bougmez valley and its terraced villages
  • High summer pastures used by transhumant shepherd families
  • A non-technical summit day at altitude, no climbing skills needed
  • Local mountain guide, cook and mule support throughout

Vollständige Beschreibung

M'Goun is the trek people book when they have already read about Toubkal and want something quieter. The massif sits in the Central High Atlas, several hours east of Marrakech, and the walk-in starts from the Aït Bougmez valley rather than from a busy trailhead.

The summit itself is a long walking day on a broad ridge at just over 4,000 m — no ropes, no scrambling, but real altitude and a big day out. Between the road and the summit you cross high pastures where families still move their flocks in summer, and you sleep in village gîtes and mountain bivouacs rather than a refuge.

We run this with our own team and verified local mountain partners who work these valleys. Because dates, group size and the exact overnight stops change the cost, the trek is quoted personally rather than sold at a fixed online rate.

Ablauf

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech → Aït Bougmez

Long road transfer east via Azilal into the Aït Bougmez valley (Agouti / Tabant area), and a first night in a village gîte.

  2. Day 2

    Valley to the Arous side

Meet the muleteers and walk up the Arous valley through farmland and hamlets towards the first high camp below the massif.

  3. Day 3

    Pass and Tarkeddit plateau

Cross a high pass towards the Tarkeddit plateau under the M'Goun ridge, sleeping at a bivouac camp on the summer pastures.

  4. Day 4

    Summit day — Ighil M'Goun

An early start for the long ridge to the summit at about 4,070 m, then a descent to camp. Expect a long day on foot.

  5. Day 5

    Gorges and river walking

Descend towards the Oulilimt / gorge country back into inhabited valleys — sandals or wet-footed river sections are usual here.

  6. Day 6

    Return to Marrakech

Final short walk to the road head and the drive back to your hotel in Marrakech.

Gut zu wissen vor der Buchung

  • This is the typical shape of the route. The exact overnight stops, walking hours and road timings are confirmed in writing with your quote, because they change with group size, season and partner availability.
  • The summit is non-technical but the trek is at altitude for several consecutive days; previous multi-day hill walking is strongly recommended.
  • Nights are a mix of village gîtes and supported bivouac camps. Tents, mattresses and cooking equipment travel with the mules.
  • The photographs on this page are our own High Atlas pictures and are not presented as M'Goun. Region-specific photography is being added.
  • The drive from Marrakech to the Aït Bougmez valley is long — allow most of a day at each end of the trek.

Häufige Fragen

How hard is the M'Goun trek compared with Toubkal?

M'Goun is lower than Toubkal but longer. Toubkal can be done in two days; M'Goun is normally close to a week, with several days above 3,000 m, so it asks more of your endurance and less of your summit-day nerve.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. The summit is reached on foot along a broad ridge. What you need is good general fitness and the ability to walk five to seven hours a day for several days at altitude.

When does the trek run?

The usual season is roughly April to October. Snow can stay on the high ground into spring, so early-season departures are confirmed with your guide before we accept a date.

Why does the price change with group size?

A departure carries fixed costs whatever the group size — guide, cook, muleteers, mules and the vehicle from Marrakech. Split between more people, the per-person price falls. Three travellers pay €860 each, four to seven pay €760, eight to twelve pay €650. One or two travellers are quoted personally because a private departure at that size cannot be sold at a group rate.

How long does the M'Goun Summit Trek last?

This experience lasts 6 days / 5 nights (shorter and longer versions on request). The experience runs from Marrakech.

Is hotel pickup included in the M'Goun Summit Trek?

Hotel pickup in Marrakech.

How much does the M'Goun Summit Trek cost?

The price is {list} per person, or {direct} when you book directly with us instead of through a booking platform. Per person, by party size: €860 for 3, €760 for 4–7, €650 for 8–12. Parties of 1–2 are quoted personally.

How many people join the M'Goun Summit Trek?

Private or small group, max 12. This tour is available as private or small group.

What languages are spoken on the M'Goun Summit Trek?

Your guide or driver speaks English, French, Spanish, Berber, Arabic. Tell us your preferred language when you book and we confirm it before departure.

What is included in the M'Goun Summit Trek?

Included: Certified High Atlas mountain guide (federation licensed), Muleteers and mules for main luggage, Cook and all mountain meals, Return private transport from Marrakech, Refuge or Berber gite accommodation as per itinerary. Not included: Personal trekking clothing and boots, Sleeping bag (rental available), Travel and mountain insurance, Drinks outside meals and tips for the mountain team.

What should I bring on the M'Goun Summit Trek?

The grade is challenging and the highest point reached is ighil m'goun, about 4,070 m.

What is the best time of year for the M'Goun Summit Trek?

This trip operates april–October.
