Hire It in Imlil or Bring It From Home? Trekking Gear Decisions for Morocco

8 de septiembre de 2026 · 8 min read

Mountain trekking gear for High Atlas preparation: boots, poles, sleeping bag and warm layers

Boots, poles, sleeping bag, down jacket, crampons — a decision list for what to carry from home and what to pick up at the trailhead.

The rule that decides most items

Bring anything that has to fit your body and anything that has to be broken in. Hire anything that is bulky, seasonal, or that you would use once and never again.

That single rule settles boots (bring), sleeping bags and mats (usually hire), poles (either), and winter hardware (hire, unless you own kit you trust).

Bring from home

Boots you have already walked in, and the socks you walk in with them. Blisters end more Toubkal attempts than weather does, and no rental cupboard fixes an unfamiliar boot on day one.

Also personal: base layers, sun protection, sunglasses for snow glare, any medication, and a headtorch you know works. Waterproofs are worth bringing if you own decent ones.

Usually easier to hire in Imlil

Sleeping bags, sleeping mats, tents, trekking poles, gaiters, and winter hardware such as crampons, ice axes and snowshoes. These are heavy or awkward to fly with, and Imlil is the last point before the trail.

Toubkal Views runs its own mountain-equipment rental operation in Imlil. Rental is €4 per item, per day, and it is arranged separately from your trek — equipment available to rent is never automatically included in a tour price.

How season changes the list

Spring to autumn the list is short: boots, layers, sun protection, a warm jacket for the refuge, and a sleeping bag. From roughly late autumn into spring the upper mountain holds snow, and crampons, an ice axe and stiffer boots move from optional to necessary.

Do not decide this from a weather app the week before. Ask what conditions are actually doing on the route you are walking.

Before you rely on hiring anything

Message us with the items, your sizes and your dates. We will tell you what we can confirm and what we cannot, item by item, rather than describing anything as guaranteed.

We do not publish brands, models, sizes or stock levels, because a photograph of a shelf is not a promise that your size is on it in March.

Preguntas frecuentes

Should I rent boots?
Only as a last resort. Boots need to fit and to be broken in, so bring your own if you possibly can.
How much does equipment rental cost?
€4 per item, per day. So one item for one day is €4. It is separate from your tour price.
Can I reserve equipment in advance?
Ask as early as you can with sizes and dates. We will tell you what we can hold — and we will not call an item guaranteed if it is not.
