How Hard Is the M'Goun Trek, Really?
11 de septiembre de 2026 · 6 min read

Non-technical does not mean easy. What makes M'Goun demanding is length and altitude, not climbing skill.
No climbing skill required — that is not the same as easy
Ighil M'Goun stands at about 4,070 m and the ascent is a walking route. You do not need ropes, and you do not need previous mountaineering. What you do need is the ability to keep walking, uphill, at altitude, on consecutive days, carrying a day pack while the mules carry the rest.
That is the honest shape of the difficulty. People rarely fail on this mountain because of a hard move; they struggle because day four arrives and the legs from day one have not recovered.
Altitude is the real variable
Above roughly 3,000 m, how your body responds is individual and only partly predictable from fitness. Strong, young, quick walkers get altitude symptoms; slower walkers who pace themselves often do not. The itinerary is built to gain height gradually for this reason.
Our guides watch for this constantly, and they will slow a group down or change a plan without asking permission. That is what the certification is for.
How it compares with Toubkal
Toubkal is higher at 4,167 m but shorter: many people climb it from Imlil in two or three days. M'Goun is slightly lower and considerably longer, spread over six days, and the approach walks through remoter country with fewer facilities.
So the comparison is not 'which is harder' but 'harder in which way'. Toubkal concentrates the effort into one big summit day. M'Goun spreads it across a week and asks for endurance instead.
How to prepare
Consecutive-day hill walking is the best preparation, because it rehearses the actual problem: going again tomorrow. Long single sessions help less than moderate back-to-back days.
Broken-in boots matter more than any other item of kit. Blisters on day two of a six-day trek change the whole trip, and no amount of mule support fixes them.
Preguntas frecuentes
- Do I need previous trekking experience?
- Multi-day experience helps a great deal, and we will ask about your recent hill walking before we accept a date. If M'Goun turns out to be more than you want, the Aït Bougmez valley trek is the same region without the summit day.
- What if someone in the group cannot continue?
- The itinerary is guided and mule-supported, and the guide will adapt the plan — including turning a person or the group back. That decision sits with the guide on the day, and we support it.
- Is M'Goun a technical climb at any point?
- As we run it, no. It is a long, exposed, non-technical ridge. Exact conditions and the plan for the summit day are confirmed in writing with your quote and reviewed again on the mountain.
