Trekking Aït Bougmez with Children: An Honest Assessment

Why this route, of all of them

Aït Bougmez is valley trekking with no 4,000 m summit day. The walking is moderate and the days can be shortened, nights are in family-run gîtes rather than tents or dormitories, and there is farmland, livestock and village life along the way rather than scree.

That combination is why it is the Central High Atlas route we would put a family on, and why we would not suggest M'Goun for the same group.

The part that decides it: the drive

Getting to the valley from Marrakech is a full road day, and getting back is another. For some children that is a manageable adventure; for others it is the thing that ruins the trip before the walking starts.

Be honest with yourself about your own children on long mountain roads. If the answer is no, the Imlil side of the Toubkal massif offers multi-day village walking far closer to Marrakech.

How we plan it around ages

Tell us the ages when you enquire. We will say honestly whether the itinerary fits, and where it does, we shorten walking days rather than pretending children walk adult stages.

Mules carry the main luggage on every itinerary, which changes a family trek more than anything else: nobody is carrying a heavy pack up a hill while managing a tired child.

What is the minimum age?

We do not publish one, because it depends far more on the child and the itinerary than on a number. Send the ages and we will give you a straight answer for your group.

Can the four days be shortened?

Not usefully. Two of the four days are the drives, so cutting a day removes walking rather than travel. A shorter family trek is better done nearer Marrakech.

What is the sleeping arrangement in a gîte?

Simple rooms or shared sleeping space in a family-run guesthouse, with blankets and a communal meal. Ask us about a private room with your dates and we will say what is realistic on your route.
