The Best Time to Trek M'Goun — Season by Season

M'Goun has a narrower usable season than Toubkal. Here is what each part of it actually feels like, and how to choose the month.

The season we actually operate

We run the M'Goun summit trek from June to October. That is not a marketing window — it is the part of the year when the long summit ridge is reliably free of snow and the high camps are usable. Outside it, the massif does not become impossible, but it becomes a different, more technical proposition than the trek we sell.

The Aït Bougmez valley below has a longer window, April to October, because it is valley walking rather than a 4,000 m ridge. That difference is the single most useful thing to understand when you are picking dates: the valley opens earlier and closes later than the summit above it.

Early season: June

June is the start of the window. The valley is at its greenest because the irrigated fields are in full growth, and the high pastures are being used. It is the month where the mountain still looks like spring and the summit day is already possible.

The trade-off is that early-season conditions vary most from year to year. Late snow on the ridge is the usual reason a June departure gets adjusted, so we confirm the plan with you closer to the date rather than promising a fixed profile months ahead.

High season: July and August

These are the most settled months on the ridge and the busiest for trekking in Morocco generally — though M'Goun stays quiet compared with the Toubkal massif in the same weeks. Long daylight helps: the summit day has room in it.

Heat is managed by altitude and by starting early, which is how mountain days are run here anyway. The low point of the trip in high summer is not the mountain, it is the road transfer, so we build the driving into the cooler ends of the day where we can.

Late season: September and October

For many walkers this is the best of it. The air is clearer, the light is longer and lower, and the valley shifts into harvest. Nights get properly cold at altitude towards the end of October, which is exactly why the window closes there rather than running into November.

If you want the combination trip with Toubkal, note that it runs May to October — a slightly wider window, because the Toubkal half of the journey opens earlier.

Perguntas frequentes

Can I trek M'Goun in winter?
Not as the trek described on our product page. From roughly November the summit ridge is a winter mountaineering objective rather than a walking route, and we do not sell it as one. If you want a High Atlas summit in winter, ask us about Toubkal instead, where we run winter ascents with the right equipment and guiding.
Which single month would you pick?
September, if the choice were free. Settled conditions, clear air, comfortable walking temperatures and the valley at its most active. June and October are both excellent and quieter still.
Do you guarantee the summit?
No, and nobody honestly can. We plan the itinerary to give the summit day the best chance, and the guide makes the call on the morning based on conditions and how the group is going. Your guide's judgement is not negotiable on the mountain.
