Central High Atlas or Toubkal Massif? Two Halves of the Same Range

Geography, briefly

The High Atlas runs across Morocco, and trekkers mostly meet two parts of it. The Toubkal massif sits south of Marrakech above Imlil and holds Jbel Toubkal at 4,167 m, the highest peak in North Africa. The Central High Atlas lies further east and holds the M'Goun massif, with Ighil M'Goun at about 4,070 m above the Aït Bougmez valley.

Seventy metres of altitude is the least interesting difference between them.

Access is the real divide

Imlil is close enough to Marrakech to make a two- or three-day trek work. Aït Bougmez is a road day away, which makes four days the shortest useful trip and six the natural length with a summit.

Everything else — crowds, facilities, price per person, how far help is — follows from that one fact.

What the walking feels like

The Toubkal side is a mountain approach: valleys narrowing into scree and rock, a refuge, a pre-dawn start, a summit. The Central High Atlas walks longer and lower for most of its distance, through irrigated valley floor, working villages and high pasture, with the ridge as a single sustained day rather than the whole point.

Neither is a lesser version of the other. They answer different questions.

How to choose

Two or three days in Morocco and you want the highest peak: Toubkal. Four days and you want mountains and village life without a summit push: Aït Bougmez. Six days and you want a 4,000 m summit with almost no other trekkers on it: M'Goun. Nine days and you want the whole range: the combination journey.

Is one range more beautiful?

That is genuinely personal. Toubkal is the more dramatic high-mountain landscape; the Central High Atlas is the more lived-in and pastoral. We would not tell you which to prefer.

Are they walkable in the same season?

The windows overlap but are not identical. The M'Goun summit runs June to October, the Aït Bougmez valley April to October, and Toubkal is walked across a wider part of the year, including winter with the right equipment and guiding.

Can I trek both on one trip?
