Before the modern pass road was built, everything moving between Marrakech and the south went through Telouet and down the Ounila valley. The Glaoui family controlled that route from a kasbah at Telouet whose outer walls are collapsing while the painted reception rooms inside are still standing — one of the strangest and most memorable interiors in Morocco.

The day crosses the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with the switchbacks and the viewpoints that go with it, then leaves the main road for Telouet. After the kasbah you follow the Ounila valley: a narrow, red-walled corridor of earthen villages, terraces and old caravanserai buildings, on the route that leads down towards Aït Ben Haddou.

It is a driving-and-walking day, not a hike. The walking is inside the kasbah and around the villages you stop at. What you get is the history of the pass in the landscape it happened in — and a road most day trips skip because the main highway is faster.

We do not publish driving times for the pass. Conditions on the Tichka vary with weather and roadworks, and we tell you the honest window for your date instead.

Itinerario

1. Morning

   Pickup in Marrakech

   Collection from your hotel or riad at the agreed window.

2. Climbing

   Tizi n'Tichka pass

   You cross the High Atlas on the pass road with stops at the viewpoints.

3. Off the main road

   Telouet

   You leave the highway for the old route and reach the Glaoui kasbah.

4. At the kasbah

   Inside Telouet

   A guided visit through the ruined outer structure to the painted reception rooms.

5. Midday

   Lunch in the valley

   A lunch stop in Telouet or the Ounila valley, paid locally.

6. Afternoon

   Down the Ounila valley

   The old caravan road between red cliffs, earthen villages and terraces.

7. Late afternoon

   Return to Marrakech

   Back over the pass to the city.
