Group Mount Toubkal Trek: How Groups Really Work on the Mountain

A group does not climb Toubkal the way one person does. Almost everything that decides the day is a group decision.

This page is for whoever ends up organising it: the friend with the spreadsheet, the club secretary, the university outdoor society, the company arranging an offsite. It covers what genuinely changes as a party grows, so you can plan before you ask anyone for dates.

Pace is the whole trek

A group moves at the pace of its slowest member on the day — not on paper, on the day. Altitude affects people unpredictably, and someone who trains hardest is not always the one who copes best above 3,000 m. Two consequences follow:

1. Build the itinerary around the least experienced walker, not the average. The difficulty guide explains why altitude and the long descent, rather than technical ground, are what turn people back.
2. Agree in advance what happens if someone stops. On summit day a party can be split so that some continue and others descend or wait, but only if that was planned and staffed for. It is not a decision to improvise at 3,800 m in the dark.

Planning by party size

We do not publish a fixed maximum group size or a fixed guide-to-trekker ratio here, because the right answer depends on the season, the route and your party — ask us and we will tell you what we can actually staff for your dates.

Sleeping

On the standard route the mountain accommodation is the refuge system, which is shared, dormitory-style and busy in season. It is not a hotel, and a large party does not get a private wing of it. Luggage and transport

Mule support is how personal kit travels on most itineraries, so trekkers carry a day pack rather than everything they own; trekking with mules covers how that works and what stays with you. Road transport between Marrakech and Imlil is included in most of our trekking itineraries, so a group usually does not need to book vehicles separately — confirm with us for your itinerary rather than assuming.

Special group types

• Groups of friends — the most common, and the most likely to have hidden mixed fitness. Ask honestly before booking.
• Hiking and walking clubs — usually the easiest groups to plan: consistent fitness, existing leadership, realistic expectations.
• University groups — typically need a named responsible leader, clear turn-back rules and a written plan; tell us early so it is built in.
• Corporate groups — the failure mode is treating a 4,167 m mountain as a team-building venue. It can be superb; it needs the same honesty about fitness as any other group.

Private group or shared departure?

A private group is your party only, on your dates, at your pace. A shared departure mixes you with other travellers. Most organisers of a defined group want the former — the comparison is set out in what a private Toubkal trek changes.

Season matters more for groups

Winter multiplies everything above: shorter daylight, crampons and an ice axe for every member, and far more chance that part of the party turns back. If your group is considering a winter date, read winter or summer on Toubkal before you set the date.
