Where to Stay Before and After a Mount Toubkal Trek

Whether to sleep in Marrakech or in the mountains before a Toubkal trek, and what actually makes the difference to your start and your recovery.
The night before a Toubkal trek is worth more thought than most itineraries give it. Where you sleep decides how early you get up, how far you drive before you walk, and how your body meets 1,700 m of altitude before you have taken a step.
Marrakech the night before
The default. Flights land there, hotels are plentiful, and you can eat well at midnight.
The cost is the morning. Marrakech to Imlil is roughly 60 km of steadily climbing road, generally about 1.5 hours with the last section slow. To start walking at a sensible hour you leave the city early, arrive slightly frayed, and begin the ascent having already spent the freshest part of the day in a vehicle.
Marrakech makes sense if you land late the night before, if your trek is a short valley day, or if the rest of your trip is city-based.
Imlil or the mountain valleys the night before
Sleeping at around 1,700 m changes the day. You wake where the trail starts, you eat breakfast looking at the route, and your body has had a night at altitude before the climb begins. For anyone attempting the summit — and especially in winter — that is a real advantage rather than a preference.
It is also quieter, colder at night, and much better for the two things that decide summit days: sleep and an unhurried start.
Afterwards matters too
Most people underestimate the descent. Coming down from the refuge is long and hard on knees, and the temptation is to drive straight back into Marrakech and out to dinner. A night in the mountains afterwards — a shower, a proper meal, a terrace and nothing to organise — is the difference between finishing a trek and enjoying one.
Afla Sky Views
Toubkal Views has its own mountain accommodation in the High Atlas: Afla Sky Views, a premium, eco-conscious mountain stay built and operated with environmental considerations, run by the same team that guides our treks.
We mention it here for a practical reason rather than a promotional one: it means we can arrange the night before and the night after within the same operation, so an early start or a late descent does not require coordinating with a third party.
Afla Sky Views is not automatically part of any trek. It appears as included accommodation only when a specific itinerary has been confirmed by our team, so ask us about the trek you are considering.

- Summit attempt, any season: sleep in the mountains the night before.
