Winter planning
December is one of the clearest, calmest months to travel around Marrakech, the Agafay Desert, the Sahara and the High Atlas — provided you plan for cold mornings, cold nights and short daylight. This is our own operating view as a Marrakech-based local operator: what each region is actually like, what to pack, and what we run in December.
December is a low-humidity, high-contrast month. Days are usually bright and comfortable for walking; mornings, evenings and anywhere above about 1,500 m are genuinely cold. The single biggest planning mistake we see is packing for a hot destination and then losing the evenings to the cold.
Daylight is short: sunrise is late and sunset is early, so a December day realistically holds one main activity plus travel, not three. Build itineraries around that instead of compressing a summer plan into fewer hours.
We do not publish temperature or forecast numbers. Conditions vary year to year and by altitude, and inventing them would be dishonest. Check a live forecast close to your travel date, and message us if mountain or desert conditions matter to your plan — we will tell you what is realistic rather than what sells.
Marrakech is at its most walkable in December: the medina, the souks, the gardens and the palaces are all comfortable in the middle of the day, and the crowds of high summer are gone. Rooftop terraces and courtyard riads are lovely at lunchtime and cold after dark.
Practically: plan indoor or sheltered options for early evening, expect pools to be too cold for most people unless heated, and keep a jacket with you even on a bright day. A full-day private city tour works well in this month because the guide can move the schedule around the light.
Imlil and the Berber valleys are cold, quiet and clear in December — one of the best months for day trips if you dress properly. Village walks, valley hikes, a cooking day or a lunch with a Berber family are all comfortable, and the mountain light in winter is exceptional.
Above the valleys, conditions change quickly with altitude. Higher trails and passes can be snow-covered, and paths that are trivial in June can require care in December. Any day trip we run in winter is guided, and route choices are made on the day.
From December onwards, Toubkal is a winter mountain, not a summer hike. Snow and ice are normal on the upper mountain, crampons and an ice axe are used, and a qualified mountain guide is not optional. Fitness alone is not the qualifying factor: winter conditions are.
Our 4-day Mount Toubkal summit trek runs year-round with winter gear from December to March, and the 8-day Winter High Atlas expedition exists specifically for this season. We confirm every winter date against the conditions of the week rather than promising a summit.
You do not need to fly with technical kit: we rent trekking and mountaineering equipment in Imlil at €4 per item per day. Bring boots, warm layers, a windproof shell, gloves and a hat; rent the rest locally.
Winter is a comfortable time to cross Morocco by road: driving temperatures are pleasant and the light is superb. Merzouga and Zagora circuits run through December, with cold desert nights — camps are equipped for winter, and a warm layer plus a hat makes the difference between a memorable night and a long one.
Agafay, the stone desert 40 minutes from Marrakech, is the easiest winter desert experience: a sunset, a dinner and a camel ride without a long drive. It loses heat fast after sunset, so treat the evening as a mountain evening, not a beach one.
Layers, not bulk: a base layer, a warm mid-layer such as a fleece or down jacket, and a windproof outer shell will cover Marrakech, Agafay and valley days. Add gloves, a hat and warm socks for the mountains and desert nights.
Comfortable closed shoes for the city, proper boots for the mountains, sunglasses and sun cream for the daytime sun, and a small torch for camps and villages. If you plan a summit attempt, talk to us before buying anything technical.
December suits families well if the day is built around daylight and warmth: a morning activity, a long lunch, an early evening indoors. Agafay dinners, cooking days, valley walks and city tours all work with children; high-altitude winter trekking does not.

Yes. Our normal programme runs through December, including the Christmas and New Year fortnight. Christmas is not a Moroccan public holiday, so daily life, transport and the souks continue as usual.

Marrakech city tour
