Christopher Nolan shot much of The Odyssey on real locations rather than on green screen, and Morocco carried three of the film's most recognisable places. The UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, near Ouarzazate, plays the city of Troy. The beach at Essaouira is where the Trojan Horse stands on the sand. The White Dune on the coast near Dakhla, in the far south, stands in for Ogygia, Calypso's island.

Moroccan reporting on the production, including an interview with the film's Moroccan executive producer Zakaria Alaoui, describes Nolan travelling the country in search of those landscapes before shooting began in February 2025. Trade coverage at the time listed the Moroccan units as Marrakech, Tahanaoute, El Haouz, Essaouira, Ouarzazate and Dakhla. The film reached cinemas on 15 July 2026.

What was built at Ait Ben Haddou, and what is still there

This is the part travellers most often get wrong. The production did not film inside a standing film set: it filmed at a living, centuries-old ksar and dressed it. According to the location research published after release, around sixty temporary structures were added around the existing ramparts — including a columned temple of Athena and the city gates — covering roughly one hectare.

Those structures were temporary. What you visit today is the ksar itself: earthen houses stacked up a hillside above the Ounila river, the fortified granary at the top, and the crossing to reach it. If you arrive expecting Troy to be waiting for you, you will be disappointed. If you arrive expecting one of the best-preserved earthen settlements in North Africa, you will not be.

Why filmmakers keep coming back to this valley

Ouarzazate has been called the Hollywood of Africa for decades, and the reason is unglamorous: reliable light, wide empty ground, established local crews and studios, and an architecture of earth and stone that reads as ancient anywhere from Judea to Troy. Ait Ben Haddou sits half an hour from that infrastructure and needs almost no dressing to look like a walled city of any era.

Productions associated with the Ouarzazate region over the years include Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones. Local reporting placed The Odyssey directly in that lineage when the film opened. Where Ait Ben Haddou is, and how far it really is

The ksar is in the province of Ouarzazate, on the old caravan road between the Sahara and Marrakech. From Marrakech it is roughly four hours of driving each way, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at more than 2,000 m in the High Atlas.

That distance is why most people see it only as a photo stop on a three- or four-day Sahara circuit, with forty minutes on the ground. It is also why a one-day version has to be private: a private vehicle can leave early, wait while you climb to the granary, and take the light at the right end of the day instead of the middle.

The road itself: Tizi n'Tichka

The drive south is not filler. You leave the Haouz plain, climb into the High Atlas through walnut and juniper, cross the pass, and drop into a pre-Saharan landscape where the earth turns red and the villages turn to kasbahs — all within a couple of hours.

In winter the pass can be affected by snow. When it is closed, it is closed; we tell travellers that rather than improvising a substitute day. If you are travelling between December and February, build a flexible day into your plans.

What to expect on the ground

You cross to the village, then climb. The route up through the houses is uneven earth and stone with steps in places, and the reward is the agadir — the old fortified granary — at the top, with the valley on one side and the ksar's rooftops below on the other.

A handful of families still live in the ksar; most of the community moved to the modern village across the river. Several houses are open to visitors and some charge a small fee, which is paid locally. It is a working place, not an open-air museum, and photographing people is a request rather than an entitlement.

The ksar faces roughly east, so early morning light hits the front of it and late afternoon light rakes across the towers from the side. Midday, when the coach groups arrive, is the flattest and least interesting hour of the day and the one most visitors get.

If your reason for coming is the cinema, the picture you are looking for is the wide one from the far bank or from the granary at the top, with the valley behind. A private day is the only realistic way to be there outside the middle of the day.

Visiting responsibly

Film tourism brings money to a small community, and it can also turn a village into a backdrop. The useful habits are simple: spend money in the ksar itself rather than only in Marrakech, ask before photographing people or interiors, keep to the paths through inhabited sections, and take your water bottles back out with you.
